Hi ~ My new puppy doesn't growl but he does back up and run when I try to pick him up. My breeder suggested the following and it has worked for us:

Offer a treat (one he loves). Keep offering until you can pick him up and then GIVE the treat. Do not give the treat until you have picked him up.

This has worked very well so far and the backing away has been a lot less. I am not a trainer or vet but in my previous experience with my baby Gizmo, the only time he ever growled was if he was uncomfortable to the point of super ouchy. Perhaps changing the way you pick him up as well? Coming from the side and scooching down to scoop instead of from the top and front? (If of course this has relevence to you).
