| should I switch my potty training method? My yorkie puppy just will not potty outside! Yes, he has done it a few times but he thinks the house is his potty. I have him on a schedule with him being crated and then going outside regularly. He will stay outside for a long time and then come inside and use the potty. I thought having my mini schnauzer around would help because he is 100% housebroke. I just don't know what to do anymore. I thought about the fake grass potty patch or puppy pads. I've always had problems with puppy pads years ago, my puppy would tear them to shreds! I've never had a yorkie and my previous dogs were all sooo easy to train! Would you switch to another method? Thanks so much! |

| Hello!! My pup goes outside.... but I also bought one of the Purina Second Nature litter boxes, and I put the puppy pads in them....just in case he needs to go in between. You can also get the pads with a holder that keeps them down and in place so they don't tear them apart. I got him when he was 10-weeks old and the vet told me his bladder would not be fully formed until 16-weeks....that is when I got the litter box and pads. I would walk him over to it periodically and he picked it up pretty quickly. He just turned 6-months, last week and I really haven't had any problems. Now, I take him outside in the morning, when we get up.... at lunch if I run home for lunch.... when I get home, then again at night before bedtime. If he needs to go in between that, he goes in the box. I also bought a diaper genie for the used pads.... It has been awesome! I was getting pads from Drs Foster Smith but recently got some from PPE Pet Supplies, which I think I like better. Hope this helps! |

I would suggest you stay out for 20. If in that time he does not go bring him inside and back in the crate. Wait another 10 mins and then go outside. When you go outside use the potty command. Inside your house, clean everything with an enzyme cleaner. If you clean up and it smells clean to you, chances are it still smells like a potty to him because of his sensitive nose. Never allow your pup to roam your house. That's just setting him up to have an accident in the house. The only time he should have access to the house is after he has a good potty outside. Bring him in and let him roam for like 30-45 mins. Never leave him alone. If it's his free roam time, or play time, you must be supervising the entire time. As soon as you see him sniff or circle, pick him up and take him outside.

| When you are training a yorkie puppy, you will need to stay out with him until he potties. If you have a fenced yard, then just keep walking around with him and repeatedly tell him to go potty. Say the same thing over and over again. He will eventually learn what you are saying. If you take him out on a leash, it's ok to walk around a bit, but try to hold the leash steady after a little while and keep telling him to go potty. He is probably young, but will eventually learn. Just do not take him back into the house until he has gone. After he does, make a big deal out of it and tell him what a good boy he is. It's ok to give him a small treat like a cheerio after he has gone. It will get easier with time, but puppies need lots of patience and consistency in their training to succeed. I would not change to pads or anything different. It would just make it harder IMO. Good luck!

| Thanks everyone! Great advice. I do not have a fenced yard at the moment. We are planning on it for the near future though! Right now I stay out with him for at least 20-30 mins but he is determined to hold it till we get back in! :-) he is only 13 weeks. I am going to keep doing the crate training I just have to be more on top of my game. I did buy a small pack of potty pads just for when it's rainy outside. The other morning he refused to step on the steps because it was wet. Thanks again. |
