YT Addict | Anyone have a Therapy Dog/Therapy Dog in training? Lula is in training. Curious of what type of therapy work people do with their dogs. Im thinking of doing a kids reading to dogs program, if that dosnt work adult hospitals or nursing homes.

| Zack and Zoey are Hospice Pet Therapy Dogs. We visit the Hospice and Nursing Home Residents a couple of times a months along with several other Pet Therapy Dogs. It is a most rewarding experience to see the Residents faces light up when they see/handle the dogs. They are most appreciative of having the dogs for a little while, even if it for just a couple of minutes. It helps them to relive earlier years when they had their own pets. Both our pups are quite tired both physically and emotionally when we finish and they usually just fall pleasantly asleep on the ride home.

| Check around in your area for what is avalible for trainign for dogs in this skill. Most will need the basic some need a CGC or CGN as well. Call a nursing home and ask if they have dogs come in and through who and that will give you who to contact and can lead to reading companion dogs. JL

| In Canada, St. John's Ambulance has a pet therapy program for hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities. They even do their own training for it! I'm hoping to take Zooey. They require all their therapy dogs to be at least a year old, so we have a bit of a wait!

Yorkie Talker | You should check out Delta society in your area. The dogs have to be delta society certified to work in our rehab center.(I am a nurse) This is a wonderful thing to do and you will make a difference in peoples lives. I am working on certification for my 7 month old Yorkie.

| Sadie is in obedience with the eventual goal of becoming Delta certified. I'm not sure if it will ever happen but we love the obedience classes anyway. Beemer has just started puppy classes. He's a lot calmer than Sadie was so maybe he's the one that'll end up being a therapy dog. My mom passed away two weeks ago and she just loved the dogs that they brought to see her. I would love to eventually have one to go visit nursing homes or assisted living. I'd like to return some of what was given to my mom. |
