| New (to me) 1-year-old - potty question Hi everyone. This is the third day that he has been here. The breeder told me that he is housebroken with a doggie door along with being crate trained. He is doing great EXCEPT that he hasn't gone potty yet today, and it's 11 am. I took him out first thing this morning with my other dog (not a yorkie). He sniffed around and kept wanting to be right with me. I walked him in the "potty" area of the yard over and over telling him to "go potty" -- nothing. So I brought him in and put him in his crate with his food/water. He ate and 20 minutes later I took him back outside for about 3 minutes. I have repeated this every 1/2 hour since 7:30 and nothing. I really want to hold him but I don't know that I should as he hasn't gone potty yet. I have read a lot about potty training and I think that I am doing the right thing but I need some input from others. I don't want to set him up for failure and I know that I have to be strong -- the breeder told me not to let him "con" me. HELP! Thanks .................... Pat |

| If the breeder stated he was potty trained w/ a doggie door, I doubt he would pee on you if you hold him! I used to hold Jackson all the time as a pup even before he was potty trained and he never pottied while I was holding him.... so I wouldn't worry about that. Just keep your eye on him 24/7 and make sure. He's in a new strange place and is just getting acclimated. He will be fine!

| Thanks for your help. I am getting ready to take him out again and then I will hold him regardless of whether he goes or not. I just love this little guy! |

| I recently went through exactly your situation. The first day, my Teddy waited hours and hours before he finally peed. Each day got a little better. I think Brit is right that it is just a matter of the dog getting acclimated. You are doing a good job taking Buddy out frequently and keeping a really close eye on him. |

| maybe lots of holding and stroking will relax him enough so he can do a wee?

| Thanks everyone. We had success as far as the peeing. I am still waiting for the other. And do I feel stupid. He didn't hike his leg this time so now I'm wondering if he really did pee earlier and I didn't see him. I have always had female dogs so this is a new experience for me. He is sitting right here next to me on the sofa where he usually is when he's not crated. Maybe I should have named him Shadow instead of Buddy! |

Jackson usually squats to pee and sometimes it's hard to tell if he's going or not. He only lifts his leg on trees on walks and at the park.

My new boy faked me out squatting too. It was almost like he was trying to hide it, but we were standing on wet pavement and I saw the yellow flow. The more I praised him, the more comfortable he was with doing his thing. Now he goes frequently just for the attention. | |
