Default My couches smell like dog urine!!

My 14 month old male Yorkie has been potty trained (outside only) for 9 months. Within the last 2 months he is peeing/marking on our couches (brand new ones!!!). I've only caught him in the act once-when he did it he was only marking, but I told him no very sternly and put him in his cage for a little while.

We've had no major changes in the past 2 months-no other animals, no new children. My husband and I are at a loss. We love Baxter like one of our children-but he has successfully ruined a $3000 couch set.

Also-how do I get this smell out?!?! We've treated the spots with Nature's Miracle Odor Destroyer-but even at $8 a bottle, it's not working.

Please help!

I'm sorry about the couches. That stinks, no pun intended
Is he fixed? If not it may help. They younger they are when they
get neutered the better. Dog's who are not fixed tend to mark more
than those who are.
I would also keep him in a gated area only until his bathroom issues
get worked out. No freedom running in the house. Putting him in
his crate when he has an accident won't help. His crate is his
sanctuary and is not suppose to be used as a punishment. Have
you thought about bellybands? Other's have used them with success.
I've always had a male and not one has ever marked in my home so
I don't know what else to suggest.

Good luck hope this helps alittle.

Hmm... thanks for the advice! You're right about the cage, thankfully to him it still is his sanctuary. My husband and I have been going back and forth on whether to keep him only in the kitchen-and you've just helped me make the decision.

We didn't want to neuter him because we were going to start looking into studding him out. If that would fix the marking, I'd neuter him in a heartbeat.

I've never heard of a bellyband before.

That is horrible! I feel your pain. Our youngest did the same thing when he was about 7 months but had not gotten neutered yet. That did help. I have used the belly bands for both of ours and it works a little. Our oldest will go in them! But atleast it isnt on my couch or floor. I actually put a female pad in them just incase they do go in them, they are just cotton and depending on the amount i wouldnt want the outside to be soaked! I would suggest using these. Also You may want to drape an old blanket, towel... over your couch so you can see if he is doing it. I would rather have it on those than my couch! That way you can atleast see if it is still happening when you feel more comfortable to let him roam. As for the smell... we used the natures miracle as well...it heeelllped but didnt rid of the smell. I would suggest having it professionally cleaned. If you do you can ask about the treatments they have for urine, i have seen ad's for this.
I hoped I could help a little. Just try what works best for you, your budget and your little one!!!!

The bellybands are used for male dogs who mark.
They wrap around their lower back and a small pad (mini pad)
is put into them. A stud dog will mark so be prepared for this
to probably never go away after he's mated.

You might try white vinagar on the leather couches. May just
help with the smell.

I hope someone here reads this because vendors do sell bellybands on
YT. Sorry I just don't know who they are. Never used one but this
will let you keep your sanity for sure.

Thank you both for your help! I just contacted a carpet cleaning service to come wash my couches. After that is taken care of, I'm going to keep Baxter in the kitchen (thankfully it's big and right next to the family room) until we can have him fixed.

Don't use Nature's Miracle Odor Destroyer, it's a different product use regular Nature's Miracle Stain and Odor Remover, it has special enzymes that are really bacteria that "eat" the protein in urine. You need these enzymes for soft surfaces. Hard surfaces are easier to clean, but soft surfaces you have to fully remove any protein or the dog will return to the spot. Sometimes you have to retreat, and remember it takes time for the enzymes to work.

Unneutered dogs give off a heavy odor when marking, if you aren't planning to breed, you might want to think about neutering him. I got a free bottle of the Odor Destroyer when I bought the regular gallon of Natures Miracle. It just doesn't prevent them from returning to the spot. I use it in the outside garbage can, works great for that. If I were you I'd buy a whole gallon and spray the couch several times and let it dry naturally. Natures Miracle is the only brand I've found that doesn't leave any rings, or stain marks. The others are cheaper, but will leave a ring.

Duke does the same thing, but it's worse because he is 2 years old and was neutered at 8 months old. He is "trained" to go on his pee wee pad but for whatever reason when I come home there is always urine on my couch.
He used to go on the rug but now I no longer have a rug for this reason
I have been buying the dollar store mattress covers, they are plastic, and cover my couch when I'm at work. This atleast prevented my couch from getting that horrible smell.
I'm lost too, and not sure what to do. I thought of gating him off while I'm away but the way the apartment is set up, I can't gate him off anywhere that's roommy enough for his food, bed and pee wee pad.

Good luck and I'm struggling with you...

In your bed? Every day on your couch? Oh I have major sympathy for you!!

UPDATE: I had the couches professionally cleaned today. $250 later and I still get a whiff of pee. Honestly it's about 75% better than it was, but I was SO hoping for it to be totally gone.

Baxter has been kitchen-bound all day and has done SO good with not jumping over the small barrier. He was rewarded lots and lots for not whining and for not jumping.

After he is neutered on March 9th I'm hoping that I can re-introduce him to the carpeted areas of the home.

Any suggestions on how to do it? I know he'll still smell is scent on the couches.

I agree with Nancy, get the regular Nature's Miracle. Kaji went on me in the car while I was in the driver seat. I absorbed as much as I could of the pee and then soaked the seat with the Natures Miracle. I waited 5 mins like the bottle indicates and there is no smell. I have a super sensitive nose and I know if Kaji has had an accident, I can smell it even if I'm standing a few feet away. Yet, in the car there isn't the faintest smell of urine.

As for re-introducing, I suggest you get belly bands. My boy tried to mark my old roomie's couches and the belly bands helped to re-train him. The bands are suppose to catch what little dribble you couldn't stop. It's less stressful for the human, leaves no smell on your furniture, which helps you and your pup be successful. I combined the belly bands, a correction, and keeping an eye on him 100% of the time he was allowed to roam. I literally followed him around the living room and as soon as I saw his little leg lift, I double clapped followed by a stern no, and Kaji put that cute little leg back down immediately. It took a week or two but Kaji started to catch on. He doesn't even try to mark anymore, even when we moved in to a new surrounding for him.

Well sorry I can't help you much. I have all girls...for that very reason... but I have babysat males before & understand what you're going through. Clearly, he marked because of all my girls in the house but after the 1st day, believe it or not, he didn't mark any more. I just made sure I took him out a couple more times than I did my girls. He marked my shoe rack at the door, a column in the living room, and a case of deer park water near the kitchen weird choices I know...LOL

Anyway, the only thing I was going to mention is that even though you got the couch cleaned, you may want to make sure you also scrub/clean around the floor/carpet area where he marked on the kitchen..drops also hit the ground even though he marked the couch so maybe that's why you're still smelling it a little.

Other than that, baby gating him while you're away(hopefully it's not too long) & only letting him out and about when you're there to keep an eye on him is a good idea.

Best of luck!
