| un-crate training Bean is 20 months old and I'd like to start leaving her out of her crate when we're not home. Any advice on how to begin this process? Our house is dog proofed, and she's never left more than 4 hours at a time. Thanks in advance for any advice! |

| Hi...Firstly I am wondering why you want to train her out of the crate...Does she go in there and behave in there etc. when you are out or busy... You also say you don't intend to leave her more than 4 hours...so being left in a Crate would be o.k. I think.. Or is she outgrowing the Crate etc.? maybe. Our Dustie..who has a Crate etc. for sleeping...when we are very busy or out..he is nearly 1 year old..and I shall keep him to this Crate as usual.. Maybe you have a specific reason for de-crating her. but if you have I would really start with leaving her in one room at a time for a short period with her basket in there and see how she reacts..maybe leave her crate in that room with a blanket in too..so if she wants she can go in there. Others may have different ideas...but some dogs are always crated ...and I don't think there is any adverse affect at all...x Chrisann x

| I only used a crate for a few weeks, then moved to using an ex-pen for Jackson with a lot more room and he never once had an accident in it, so then I would leave him in my bedroom with a baby gate. He's always done fine w/ free roam (it's when we're home that he gets into things, LOL) and has had it since about 5 months old.

She's always been crated but never really cared for it. She won't play with toys or take treats in the crate, but will play/eat as soon as she gets out. Also, I often hear her crying from outside my house when I come home. I've tried leaving her in one room with her crate open but she gets so nervous she pees at the door I went out. Thanks for the advice! | |

| Hi...I see what you are saying...It m ight be best then to start her off by leaving her in one room and see how she gets on...!! I do appreciate that every dog is different...I am on my fifth Yorkie..and he is excellent in going in the crate etc. but with the other Yorkies that I had they were penned in a corner of a room and never liked it really..so they are all different.. Maybe someone can give you some more ideas...xx Chrisann x

| I also keep my yorkie in one room (the kitchen) when I'm out. I'm afraid of what he can get into when I'm not watching and he tends to have accidents when he is roaming free, so he is happy just staying in the one room. |

| I'm no expert, but have you tried just leaving the crate door open? I've read that dogs really like the security of the crate, so even if you leave the door open, if she's already crate trained she will probably spend a lot of time in there anyway. |

| I didn't crate train mine. But they have a pee pad to go too if they need to go. It might be a good idea to train her to go inside too, but I'm not an expert and I'm not sure if it will break her routine. Good Luck!!
