| Should I let them mark on an outside walk? I have two little boys, Harley and Chief. They are 9 mos. old, both are neutered and they are both pad trained. As they have gotten a little older I have noticed occasional marking. Not necessarily in the same spot. I am familiar with how to clean up accidents and they are not picking up a previous scent. My question is "Should I let them mark outside when we walk?" I know this behaviour is instinctual but should I discourage them from marking when we walk outside? |

| Jackson lifts his leg on trees, etc when on walks. I think it's absolutely fine to allow (I let him mark outdoors) as long as it's on YOUR terms. Don't let him be stopping you every 5 seconds to mark. It's just instinctual. Jackson is also neutered and never marks indoors.

| I also allow Buddy to mark outdoors whenever he wants. He'll pee 4 -5 times while were walking then the marking begins when nothing else is in him. I have no problem with this since he has never gone potty or maked indoors since being housebroken. He's only doing what comes naturally and better outdoors then in our home. |

| Yes, but not on other people's property or grass. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh yes, I not only allow it, I encourage it, and say, "good boy"! I think this cuts down or eliminates inside marking. His two "nephews" (my grown sons' dogs) mark inside, and I believe it's because they don't walk them enough. All three have been neutered.

| Did they start marking before they were neutered or after?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | One dog didn't even lift his leg up to pee until he met Joey, and he was over 4, and had been neutered the first year. The second dog, was neutered very young, the breeder had him neutered, and didn't start marking until he met Joey. Lol, it's Joey's fault! Seriously, I've had male dogs all my life, and they never marked inside, but I never had other male dogs over to my house for visits. Being around other male dogs, and sometimes females is what gets the inside marking going. The hormone testosterone is involved with marking behavior, and while the testes make the bulk of testosterone, the adrenal glands make some as well, and that is why some females are known to mark.
