| Help please! I just got a 1.4 pound tea cup pup on sunday. I brought her home today. I have 2 2 year old mini dauchsaunds and a 12 year old mix. I am scared to put her down because I don't know how they will react. Are yorkies good with other dogs? When should I start giving the pup wet dog food, or should I? She turns 2 months in 3 more days. Someone please help me! Give me some facts, I have never owned and know nothing about them! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Welcome to YT. So, your puppy is 7-8 weeks old, right? First off, she was too young to be taken from her mother at this age. I would be extremely careful introducing this puppy to your others and they should never be left alone together. When it's not possible for you to be right there with them, keep the puppy separated in an ex-pen or crate. What is she currently eating? She should be on a good quality puppy food now. It may help her to eat it moistened with a little warm water.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome and congratulations. She is vey tiny and young so it is very important that you make sure she is eating frequently (about every 4-5 hours) so that she doesn't get low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) which they can be prone to when so little. Is she eating dry food right now? If she is then as long as it is a quality dog food she should be fine. If she is not eating it very well you can moisten it or mix in some wet food. Just make sure she is eating. As far as introducing her to your others I would give her a day or so to settle in and then introduce the one at a time and maybe have someone else with you so you can quickly pick her up if needed. If your dogs are dog friendly they should all get along once they get use to each other. The main thing is to be careful with the size difference until you know they are all ok together and I wouldn't leave her with them unattended until she is much older. You will love having a yorkie! Just ask any questions you have and enjoy you new baby. I live in Gurnee, IL.

| My Yorkies and Pommies have been together for several years. I still do not allow them to be together when I leave the house. It just is so easy for larger doggies to harm without meaning to. My Pommies are only 3-5 lbs. heavier than my Yorkies but it still could be deadly.

Senior Yorkie Talker | You've come to a great place to learn about your new baby. Yorkie Talk is great! How old is your baby? I'm just asking because people tend to think that because you have a really tiny dog in size that you've gotten it from a breeder way too soon, and that is not always the case. My daughter got a tiny yorkie at Christmas that was actually over 12 weeks old. Some yorkies are 'just tiny'....and after all..."somebody" has got to love and give a home to the little ones too...right?? lol! Either way, with a new little one you should first and foremost get them totally vet checked....make sure they are eating well and often. I don't like to feed mine wet (canned food), because it makes their stool too soft and messy and they seem to have more stomach issues with it. But if that is all that yours will eat at this point, then stick with it until you can gradually switch them over to a good quality dry food...one that is small bites for small breed dogs. If for some reason your baby is not eating well at any point or has any stomach issues, my vet recommended plain yogurt and it worked wonders with my Callie who was very finicky and had some of those issues when we first bought her home. You really do have to be careful with the hypoglycemia especially in tiny puppies. It can creep up on them so fast. Feed them often,...and I always kept corn syrup (like Karo) on hand or sweetend water in case we ever had that happen. Get it in their mouth via your fingertips, dropper, rub it on their gums...whatever you have to do. Hypoglycemia can be fatal. Research and learn all you can about it. Be especially careful with your new baby as far as putting him/her up on the couch/bed with you. Yorkies are VERY brave and they WILL jump! I've read countless stories about Yorkie puppies who have jumped from high places and ended up with broken legs. Another thing about Yorkies that is different from some other puppies is the grooming. It is recommended that you brush your Yorkie daily. With a new puppy, (or at least with Callie when she was a pup)...I discovered that she had what was called "a puppy coat" underneath all that fur. Even though Yorkies don't shed, which is wonderful.., they DO shed that one-time puppy coat. So brushing your puppy daily will help get rid of all that "fuzz" underneath and let her coat breathe and keep her skin under there healthy. There are all kinds of combs and brushes out there, especially designed for their coats, that ppl recommend. Some are way more expensive than others. My baby's coat hasn't gotten that long yet so tangles and matting hasn't been an issue. I am still using the little cheap comb and brush I got at W'mart and but I plan on investing in some better ones very soon. Through the advice of my best friend, I learned that cornstarch works wonders with tangles and matts! Just rub a little into the fur that's matted and it will start to separate! I don't know what your plans are for potty training, I chose puppy pads because I work during the week and there was just no way I was leaving my baby in a crate for that long. Crate training is wonderful I'm told and definitely worth looking into if it will work for your arrangement. There are lots of other methods too like bell training for instance. With any of these, consistency is the key. I will say that Yorkies are stubborn and it has been my experience that they are a little harder to train than other breeds I've had in the past. The most important thing of all that I can tell you is this: Of ALL the dogs I've had and loved over the years, (I'm 43 and I've had many~)...this little Yorkie has truly stolen my heart. I've never had a dog with such personality and such sweetness. I am so in love with my Callie Lou Sugar Bug!~ Enjoy the new love of YOUR life!

| Thanks so much Thank you everyone so much. I have been so nervous lately and never know what to believe when I read the facts about yorkies. Anywho, an aquaintance of mines mom bought her, and decided she wasn't ready for a puppy--this left me feeling HORRIBLE so I decided to take her. The person who gave her up is going to pay for her first few vet bills. She got her from plainfield. The parents were on sight and Sophie will be 8 weeks on the 23rd. She was born November 23rd 2009. I am already so attached but still, a nervous reck-haha. The breeder said she will be around 5-6 pounds but she is still such a little girl. I have decided against letting her sleep with me because I am worried of rolling over or her falling. I have bought a playpen from toys r us that is mesh and raised a little bit over the ground..inside I have putt her pee pads, tons of blankets, her food, and her water. She is doing pretty well with going potty and i kiss and praise her everytime she does. Right now, I have her eating Ukanuba puppy food (small breed). Thats what the breeder was feeding her. She is eating well and I have been crushing up a cookie with 1/4 vitamin she was sent home with. I didn't know if I ever should put her on wet food, thats why I was asking. Since all my other dogs eat it, I was just seeing if I ever should or not. She got her first set of shots on 1/14 and she is due 1/28, so I will be taking her then. I plan to keep her coat short. I think the long hair would be too hard to tame, plus I think the short coats are cute! it's so funny because only one ear is up right now, and she only has a few teeth so far. She is absolutely adorable though. She has been sleeping all day because I don't think she has gotten good sleep. I know this sounds very stupid, but is it normal for her to be sleeping alot? I figured since she is a small little puppy she will. I have her blanket from her mommy so she sleeps with that-the breeder said I should keep it unwashed for at least a week. She sleeps good through the night except last night she woke up and I let her sleep with me for a little while then put her back in her playpin. My only other concern really is sometimes her nose gets pretty wet, is this normal too? Callie Lou-she looks very very similar to your pup, except shes black and brown. a little silver too! I would like to get a pic up but have to figure out how first. Introduced her to one of my dauchsaunds and they seem to get along pretty well. My pup thinks she is sophies mom and has been very concerned with her every move. I am going to wait a little while until I fully set her down. I am such a nervous nelly, I know. I am only 20 years old--luckily I still live with my parents so they are here to help or I would go crazy! haha. Also, she has gotten kind of mad when I tried to put a collar on her--maybe she just doesn't know what it is? I am training her inside for the winter because its way too cold right now. Patti-I live in Hinsdale--not too far away. Thank you everyone for helping me along the way--i have had a few breakdowns so far because I am just so worried! Keep the facts coming, better more then none! |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Erin, I just now saw where you had told us her age in your very first post....'duh' for me~ I wasn't paying attention~LOL Anyhow, it sounds like you're doing great so far!! I agree with your decision about keeping the coat short. I think short cuts are soo cute! I used a playpen when I first brought Callie home too! Worked great~ Keep us posted!

| How are your other 2 dogs dealing with her? Do they seem to like her? If you're not too overwhelmed right now, you might want to try switching her to a higher quality food. You seem like you're doing a great job. Welcome to YT |

Now on feeding your pup. At Sophie's age, I have just begun weaning my pups off their mother. Sophie more than likely has milk teeth, but it would be great if you softened her kibbles in warm water (make sure it's filtered). She should be eating 4 to 5 meals a day. Also, if you are having difficulty to get her to eat, you might attempt to give her Gerber's rice cereal, with a bit of warmed Goats Milk and Karo Syrup...... Good Luck and Congrats on your new baby....hope you have many years together.

| She got her first set (dewormed and such) from her breeder. I am taking her to the vet for a checkup today. Shots are not until next friday, she will be 9 weeks then. She has been eating well too. |

| One of my dogs acts like her mom and the other one is just concerned with her toy, haha. They enjoy playing with her and I haven't heard one growl. They are 10 pounds so I have to remind them not to get too rough. Sophie acts as if she is a 50 lb. dog though, haha. |
