| pee pads or outside? Hi everyone, I am fairly new to YT and am so glad I found it! We are getting our baby the in of march and I am starting my research. I am trying to decide between pad training and outside training. My mom has a yorkie and she is 4.5lbs and has always gone on pads. My moms swears by them. I am just not thrilled with my dog going to the bathroom in the house (especially since I live in a town house and most likely it would have to be placed in the dining room so we could reward for going etc.). But I am also concerned about the dog being so small and getting cold etc. Anyhow, I would appreciate any advice that you can share. Still not sure if we are going to get a male or female. I am soooo torn about that. :-) Thanks |

| Personally - I do not like pee pads. I understand for people who live in apartments or for certain other reasons but I just don't like the idea of allowing a dog to go inside. I find that people who use pee pads have WAY more housetraining issues because the dogs confuse rugs for pads, etc.... I'm just not a big believer in them. Jackson is a big Yorkie at 12lbs so he doesn't get cold as easily but the day that I got him at 9 weeks old (5lbs then), he started going outside (I did have some pads for 1 week but he never used them anyways). My friend has 2 yorkies, both under 5lbs and they've always been outdoor trained. I would never want to bring Jackson to a friends house and lay down a pee pad for him... I don't think they'd appreciate that so much! But I think it's all a matter of lifestyle or preference... I'm not gone from home too much so he never has to hold it for more than 6 hours. As for the boy/girl thing... that's a tough one, too! Either are great. I'll just say I always had female dogs my whole life and Jackson is my first boy... I don't know if I will ever own a girl again, I just love my little boy, hehe. Boys typically tend to attach to female owners more, whereas females often attach to male owners more. Boys are often less independent and more cuddly and more willing to please. Of course that's definitely not ALWAYS the case.

| It takes just a little extra effort to take them Outside and tell them to go potty, as it does on a pee pad. But the difference is well worth it. outside is free, outside has no soiled pee pads in the trash, outside has no shredded pee pads (when they like to play with them).Out side is just natural. guess you can tell I am for outside lol

| I have found she does not use the pee pads near as well as she has taken to outside. Now I do live in Florida and live in a house so I have a yard right outside my front/back doors. She will whine when she is looking for a place to go and I say "outside" in a nice but firm voice, not like a "no" when she bites. She runs to the closest door and usually goes within 30 seconds of touching the grass. I placed the pee pads where she has the most accidents and for that they have worked well. I do not plan to keep this in practice though, more for just accidents during puppyhood. I will say we are pretty lucky though, almsot always there is someone home. She has never been left for more than 2 hours and is crate trained already at 14 weeks. |
