Feeding, toilet training and crating. Hi I got my new puppy Toby on Thursday he is 11 weeks old. On Saturday morning I came down to him having a fit!!!! I rushed him to the vets, the vets gave him a glucose drip and within 15 minutes was very well, he came home 4 hours later as bright as a button. The vet said stress could have caused it, as he had his jabs on friday. The vet has currently advised me to leave food down so that he can graze as and when he wants. He is paper trained and is crated. A couple of questions... 1) when should I start taking him outside to toliet? as because he is feeding when he wants he toilets when he wants. 2) At the moment he is in the crate all day and I get him out in the evening for a play and cuddle. What is the best way the crate train him, currently he barks for about 10 minutes after a fuss in the crate, I never go to him whn he is barking. I play and fuss him during the day in the crate. Any advice would be great

Hi and welcome sorry about your little guy having a problem. Glad he is ok. I started my pup right away to go outside but I have my own yard. He started before all his shots. If you dont have your own private yard you might want to wait till he has his booster shots as they are not fully protected till the booster shot from what I have been told anyway. If you are right with him and he has his paper to go on then you could let him out anytime.Just put him back in his pen if you cant watch him as he might end up doing a pee or poop in different place than the paper. Hope this helps and lots of good advice will come on here. Good luck

| Pooping once to twice a day is normal for an adult yorkie

Hi I do have a garden, but currently I have been told to keep him in as its a little cold atm, and with his hypo attack they told me to keep him in the warm. He is currently doing about 10 very small poos in a 24 hour period. Will it be ok for me to start him outside in a few weeks when he is a little older and settled in??

I am glad your puppy is doing okay. That must have been a scare. You might want to keep Nutrical on hand. It's a paste for puppies to eat. I gave Sydney a bit of it after breakfast everyday until she was well past 12 weeks. Sydney also doesn't like the cold and damp. Living where I'm at, the winters are not kind. That's why I started right away on getting her wee wee pad trained. After 12 weeks, you don't have to do free feeding (but perhaps keep him on the Nutrical or at least free feed him until the vet says to stop). If you can control his eating, then you can control his 'go' time. I know Syd will poop when she first gets up and about a half an hour after breakfast. She will then poop after lunch and then again after dinner. Her final poop is usually around 9. I get Syd up at 7 for potty. She then eats, plays for about a half hour, goes potty, and then back into her crate. I let her back out at noon for lunch, play, and potty. Back into the crate. At 5 I let her out for dinner, play, and potty. She then goes back into her crate. At 8 I let her out for water, play, and potty. The same at 11 p.m. While I don't fully trust her yet (she's four months) she does have more freedom now that she has proven that she will go to the pads on her own. If the weather is nice, I do take her outside. She won't have all her shots until tomorrow. Please let us know how it goes. Sincerely, Sonya
