| Puppy Pads vs. Outside Ok, so I just got Baxter yesterday, he's a wonderful little guy (16 weeks old). He's got the puppy pad thing down (his breeder used them with him). So now I'm trying to transition him into going outside. I've seen where people take the pad just outside the door, or run out when he starts to go, but I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building. Obviously these things won't work for us. Help? |

| Hi! Welcome to the group Congrats on your new addition! Living in a condo/apartment can make it difficult to train your lil one to go outside. Do you have a deck or patio? If so, you can train him to use the potty pad outside. I have a small deck of my living room and I placed the pad outside with a holder and she’s learned to do her business outside. But trust me regardless if they are trained for the potty pad or outside, they are still going to make a few...no a lot of mistakes in the house. Lola is a 1yr old and will still have the occasional accident on the carpet. Best of Luck!

| I live in a condo, and Spike is trained to both pads and outside. It took a long time, and I think it's because you really have to think of it as two different skills. The biggest thing I learnt with training Spike to go outside is that for the first little while, he thought outside = going for a walk. So the minute he peed, it was back inside with lots of praise so he would learn that taking care of business should be the first thing he does when we get outside, even if we ARE going for a walk! |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Outside for us My husband and I recently switched Lola from wee wee pads to going outside for sanitary reasons. I'm not a neat freak but I just like my apartment to look and smell a certain way. To my surprise, she did better going outside than she did using the pads and that made us both very happy I am trying to stay as consistent as possible with her schedule and that has made all the difference. I watch her very closely all day to avoid accidents and take her out 3 times a day. She seems to like going out a lot more than the pads and has not had an accident since the switch. My advice is to learn your pups schedule and try to adhere to it. Figure out how long it takes for them to go after they eat. The first walk may take a while before they understand what you want them to do so try not to get discouraged. It took Lola about an hour the first time before she got it. It may help if you time it for when you know they have to go. Give lots and lots of praise and don't give up!
