YT 500 Club Member | Too Friendly? My two are so friendly that they want to rush over and meat up with every-one and ever dog we pass in the street. I want to start teaching them to sit still or walk calmly past others without them jumping up. I can eventually get them to sit if they are far enough away but trying to do it close up is difficult. Tried to get them to sit still when a Westie was approaching yesterday and the woman thought it was because they were aggressive, she told her grand-daughter to ' Go Past Quickly'. I then spent time explaining no they were overly friendly. While this going on they are nice and quiet because nobody is paying them attention, but as soon as people realise they're sweet , they just start talking to them and fussing them, so I just cant win as they play up to the attention. Any ideas how I can stop them without people getting the wrong idea or them thinking theres something wrong and turning the other way? |

| Assuming your dogs already know the command sit. Ask people you meet in the street not to pet your dogs until they are sitting politely for petting or for treats. If they get up, then ask them to sit again before they get what they want, which is the petting or treats. Sooner or later your dogs will realize they will not be petted or fussed over until they sit. |

| Hah, Chloe has almost the opposite problem!! She's well-behaved and quiet when people are approaching (I mean, she wants to get to them, but she doesn't go nuts). However, if they walk on by without acknowledging her, then she will start barking and chasing after them...trying to get their attention. Poor doggie...she doesn't like to be ignored!! -C

YT 500 Club Member | THey are perfect on the sit command in the house, I did start doing it outside but admittedly stopped but have recently started it again just over a week ago. Just got back from a walk and it was much better they are starting to respond to sit much sooner. Fortunatly met a guy walking his Lab whos met them before a he stood patiently with his dog while I got my two to calm down and sit. This is great but most people are not willing to listen and just want to talk to them and tell them how cute they are so I'm trying to destract them- the people- so the dogs can calm down. I keep telling myself were are going to take backwards steps occassionally and try to take a deep breath before continueing but some walks just aren't as enjoyable as they should be, but they are both still young and as they learn I'm learning so hopefully we wont repeat the same mistakes. |
