I was interested in purchasing this for my little 4 pound yorkie. I am always afraid that she'll run out the door or under the gate when not watching her.

PetSafe Little Dog Remote Trainer - Small Dog Training Collar

Do you think something like this would be safe and not harmful? Have any of you used it? What else do you suggest.

I would not use it I went and looked and it gave no information on the weight of the product. Their necks are so sensitive and small I would not take the chance. I would spend plenty of time teaching her to sit at the door and invest in an long leash attached to a harness outside before I put that on.

I would vote no. If she is really on a tear, the collar will not stop her anyway. They did a demonstration of one of these collars (full size) on "It's Me or the Dog" at level 2 of 10. The person described even level 2 as extremely unpleasant.

Remember also that you will have to keep this collar on her all the time (and powered), particularly if you want it to prevent her from running out of the house. You will also have to have the remote with you at all times. If she gets shocked, she may become fearful of leaving the house at all, or afraid to move if the collar is on. Basically, I've heard of many, many ways these collars don't work as intended.

Train her to Sit/Stay before you open the door, and make it a routine to always know where she is, and leashed if necessary.

Just my opinion!

I purchased a similar collar.It has sound and shocking capabilities.Our little Izzy ran off every time we let her out without a leash-she would not go on a leash.
Usually you can use the sound part to warn her when she is straying.I did use the shock on a low setting once or twice-that is all she needed.Now she responds to the sound.
I was leary of using this but I was at my wits end having to chase her in the neighbors yard in my pjs.Good luck.Be sure you get one for a small breed dog.

If someone is not able to have a Yorkie without a remote training collar , its better not to have a dog .

I think this is a cruel way to train your dog. Yorkies have such small sensitive necks, I would never put one of these collars around any of my pac. Its your choice, I just know I wouldnt want a shock collar around my neck. Money is better spent on a training class or a book. Good Luck to you. Lissette

This is something I personally would not put on any dog I owned.
Dog ownership requires patience and training. You owe it to yourself
and your pet to keep him safe. Yes, it takes hours, days and sometime
months to get him trained they way you want but it's worth it.
A dog that does not like a leash is a dog that is not worked with.
Any dog can learn to be leash trained and trained for almost anything.
It's the time, patience and constant repetition that people don't want
to do and in place of this look for alternative ways to train. This is not
training, it's just an easy fix and the poor dog get's to get the shock!

If your not willing to put in the time to train the way a dog should
be trained then a dog is not for you.(meaning anyone)
