| "sit" problems! Ok so We are doing better on potty training..not great, but better, adn I might ad its me thats being trained, more than him i think... ok now on to the reason for my post--- I am having a really hard time getting him to SIT! I know of all things sit! I try and have been trying since we got him to get him to sit, he will sit,but not on command and not when i have a treat for him, etc. I have tried treats, yorkie yummies, hand gestures, waiting till hes not too active (yeah right)... I try getting im to look at me then saying sit and motioning the treat slightly above him, he backs up, or jumps up into my hand, even if its right at his nose level... please help! I feel like i cant move on to other commands until he gets this one....

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Have you tried catching him when he was already sitting, saying "sit" and giving him a treat. he should catch on that when he sits he gets a treat. and he'll also associate the word with the action, so after a while you'll be able to give him the command and he'll perform the action to get a treat.

| A Great trick is to start with the dog standing and you can see this on "It's Me or the Dog" Put the treat in your fingertips and then turn up your hand as you say Sit This will force him into a sitting position

| We had a problem with a "jumper" too. The normal technique to get a dog to sit is to lift the treat over the dog's head until he sits. That works because a dog's head is higher sitting than standing. Well, if the dog jumps, that technique doesn't really work. We found that it works to back him into a corner of a room so his bottom's toward the corner; he doesn't really have the space to jump. Then, you can bring the treat over his head until he sits. Good luck! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I used the method a previous poster shared about catching her sitting and saying the word then and giving a treat. My trouble is I can't get her to take a treat from my hand! Also, my timing isn't the best because she'll start after my husband as he walks by (about the time I'm saying sit) and she'll stop in her tracks and sit right then. It is cute and funny because she's not near either of us at the time but she sits! I don't think she cares much about the treats...she just loves our praise. When she goes potty on the pee pad, you'd think we were celebrating winning the lottery. She loves the applause and celebration! |

Got a stubborn one, too, 9 months and in his own world... Try this.....place a piece of meat in your hand or a treat that induces great response. Cover the treat in your hand and allow him to smell it. Step back and ask him to, "Come." Their name should not be in the command, and the command should be simple and clear. When he comes, break off a small piece and reward. Cover the treat again in your hand. Tell him, "Sit." Bring the treat slightly over his head and back towards his tail in a straight motion, hopefulling inducing a "sit." Do not reward if he doesn't do it. If he doesn't sit, force his bottom down gently with your hand. While he is sitting, reward. This has to be quick, and while he is sitting, because they have terrible short term memories. Keep doing this over and over, day by day, until he understands that this position = sit = reward. My male has the female to model and she's been to a trainer, but will not perform without a treat. This does not work well when she is running all over the complex and I am running after her screaming, "Come, come, come!!!!!"...hehehehe...I know you can picture this... Patience is required in huge amounts. They have a mind of their own, especially when young. Good luck with the furbaby's progress....Blessings, Lisa, Lilly & Jesse | |

| I just love Victoria"s advise. I have her book. It is really informative. It has helped with my two bigger dogs a lot.

| Austin is my first dog and at four months old. I thought I'd have a horrible time getting him to do anything. Two weeks ago we learned "sit" Although he won't sit on tile floor (to cold for his bottom I guess) he's perfect at it. Today we have accomplish "lay down". I attribute two technics to our luck. Since lay down happened today I'll use it as an example 1. I waited for him to lay down and then gave him a treat. Repeating the command lay down lay down over and over all while giving him treat after treat. 2. I find that training works best for both of us in the morning before breakfast. We both have patience. And he's hungry and motived to eat something. Also I made up a hand signal so he will sit and now lay down to my simply hand movement. And I mix it up sometimes I speak. Sometimes just the hand movement sometimes both. |
