Austin is my first dog and at four months old. I thought I'd have a horrible time getting him to do anything. Two weeks ago we learned "sit" Although he won't sit on tile floor (to cold for his bottom I guess) he's perfect at it. Today we have accomplish "lay down".
I attribute two technics to our luck. Since lay down happened today I'll use it as an example
1. I waited for him to lay down and then gave him a treat. Repeating the command lay down lay down over and over all while giving him treat after treat.
2. I find that training works best for both of us in the morning before breakfast. We both have patience. And he's hungry and motived to eat something.
Also I made up a hand signal so he will sit and now lay down to my simply hand movement. And I mix it up sometimes I speak. Sometimes just the hand movement sometimes both. |
