outside while training/how often/crates!! :)

hey everyone, so puppy turned 5 weeks yesterday and i feel like i'm cramming in the info before he comes home so i have thought of a few more questions... (Just for some background info, I am crate training, and outside only potty training )

Ok so i am a stay at home mommy so i will be home for the most part, always, with puppy. I have never housetrained a puppy before let alone one with such a small bladder, so question #1 is.... How often should I take him outside?? Every 1/2 hour? Hour?

Next question. My mom told me not to take puppy out for walks or anything until he is fully housetrained. I know with a yorkie this could take a while, and my concern is this. When his shots are done and he can go outside for "recreation" should I really not take him unless he is fully housebroken?? My son plays t-ball/soccer over the summer and i walk a lot. I thought this would be great for socialization with all different ages of people... but if he is not supposed to be out until he is fully housetrained, its going to be a looooong summer. Has anyone ever heard of this? Would it be ok if he came with us wherever but I kept the potty treats consistant? Like to give him the same treat when he pottys outside even if we aren't at home? This is one of my biggest concerns b/c we spend a lot of time outside, and outside away form our house and my plan was to bring him and socialize him to different situations... but then my mom said this and i got confused

And last, basically just any advice as to crate training. I am going to start it from day one. I am home for the majority of the time but there will obviously be times i need to leave him alone (shopping, a couple of concerts we have tickets for, ect.) We really dont have an area to have an x-pen. Carpet and wooden floors that hubby wouldnt go for pee and poo on.... and i dont want to leave out potty pads b/c i want him to only go outside and not be confused... so the crate is definately what we will be using....

First off, I've been housebreaking dogs over 30 years, and my advice on taking him for walks is take him often for walks. Also take a little bag of treats with you, when he potties outside, tell him you pee peed outside good boy, and give him a treat. Myself I think it helps them to learn that much easier. Mine now are all trained to pee pads, but, for years, before these 4, they were trained outside.
I'm not big on crate training at all, I always did the xpen. You never want to leave a puppy in a crate for more than how many mos. he is plus up to 1 hour. So, 3 mos puppy+3 to 4 hours at the most.

thanks so much! you have been a huge help, with this and my food issues I dont plan on him being in the crate often AT ALL. like i said i am mostly always home so its just for emergencies basically... and at night, at least til he gets used to our other dog. and if i am away during the day it would RARELY be for more than 3 hours...

How often do you think I should let him out?

My yorkies is 8 weeks and we go out every 15 to 20 minutes. AND WHENEVER YOU SEE THEM SNIFFING! I know that seems like a lot, but he is starting to get it. When he does go I give him a treat. He RUNS to where I keep the treats. I would say we are doing well. I am hoping that if I keep up with this up for a few months that we should be pretty much done! That is my hope anyway!

Just so you know potty training your pup will be a full time chore. . I have been working with Tucker since the day he came home at 7 weeks and he is just now fully trained at 6 months old. With a lot of accidents in between. Unfortunaly I started out with the pee pads, that is what he was using at the breeders, I figured I would continue. Huge mistake!! I have never inside trained a dog and wont again. All of my dogs were fully housetrained by the time they were 4 month old. Tucker was the hardest dog to train, but I confused him so I blame myself. Pee pads do work for some people, just not us. . I started taking him out every hour that he was awake. He always peed, the poo was hit and miss. Most of his accidents were poo. However sometimes I would bring him in and 15 mins later he would pee again. Use treats and lots of praise and once you find something that works, stick with it. I would start out every half hour at first then slowly add a few minutes at a time. You have to be patient and consistent, puppies are just like potty training a child. . Your pup will have accidents, just use a firm NO and take him/her outside, say potty etc. I use the same words over and over again, go potty, go potty. I only kept Tucker outside long enough to potty, then right back in the house again. I wanted him to know that while we were outside that it was too potty, no playing. Now that he is trained we play outside.. alot. . Some people on here have had great sucess using bells on thier doors so that when the dog had to go, they would ring the bell. I havent tried it, but im sure someone can explian to you how it works and how to train your pup if you are interested.
Im a firm beliver in crates and crate training, X-pens are good too. All of my dogs are crate trained and go into them when were arent home and at night. For thier own safety and for my house. (my beagle likes to get into the garbage, eat my shoes and my sheltie ALWAYS has an accident on my carpets when left uncrated,and my toy poodle will eat my blinds!!)
Congrats on getting your new pup, they are alot of hard work but they are also the most loving little creatures!!

When I used to housebreak outside, I would take them out quite often at first. Whenever they would eat or drink. (You can buy these little bags that fit on a belt loop on your pants, throw treats in it) Always make sure you have those on you(we used those little goldfish crackers)and when you take him out, tell him go potty. When he goes, givel lots of praise and a cracker, he will learn very quickly. I know people will say yorkies are hard to housebreak, mine never took any longer than any other dog I've ever had. When you catch him going on the floor, I would tell mine NO and then take them right outside and tell them you potty outside. Dogs love to make you happy. He will learn quickly. Consistency is the answer! As he gets older you can start taking him out less. You will also learn to know what to watch for when he's got to poop. I've seen male dogs actually keep walking as they're peeing, so, kind of hard sometimes on the peeing. The last dog I had I trained to go outside was a shih tzu, by the time she was 4 mos old she was completely housebroke and would come jump at me when she had to go out

thanks so much.. i do have another dog but she was a rescue and trained when we got her...

so i think i have a good grasp on what to do...

still worried about being outside when not fully housetrained though, i think my mom is just worried i'm getting a puppy and kind of trying to scare me out of it a little? b/c she knows how much outdoor time we have/traveling to close-by family during the summer, all of which i planned on puppy being included on til she said that.

Anyone have any bell ringing stories to go outside? sounds like an awesome idea nd i'd love more info. only thing i can think of is i have a cat and i can see her swiping the bells so that might not work out here...

I think it's totally fine to bring him to your sons t-ball games and such! That's a GREAT place for dog socialization and it may even help him with potty training because he will probably smell other dogs pee and want to go. I know having another already potty trained dog at my house made it easier for me to train Jackson (he's about 98% potty trained at 5 months) because he smelled our other dogs messes already so he quickly caught on that's where he's supposed to go. I would totally recommend including your puppy on all of your outdoor trips! Pups love that kind of stuff and it's good to get them started young!

My advice will be short and sweet! Lots of PRAISE and treats when your pup goes to the bathroom outside... and it is ok for them to go on walks before being potty trained.. I dont see why that wouldnt be ok? If you waited till your pup was fully trained you will be waiting a lonnnng time! LOL Good luck!
