| New apartment, no more pottying on the carpet!! My fiancee and I just moved into a new apartment and with 3 small dogs (2 yorkies and a jack russel) we don't want our new place smelling like our old one did! Sounds gross but these dogs peed all over the carpet. It's not like we don't take them outside, when we do they don't go it just ends up inside on the carpet. This is a nice place and we want to keep it this way. How can we get these dogs trained to let us know when they have to go so there are no more incidents in our new place?

| How old are they? Have you ever tried crate training? Do you want them outside trained or indoor/pad trained?

| Aw! I just realized that our babies were born on the same day! How sweet! Anyway, you have be very consistent and very firm with them. Maybe you could try getting a doggy bell to hang on your door and everytime you go out, ring the bell so they associate the bell with going out to potty. Treats are key too. You also have to let them know that it's a bad thing when they pee on the carpet. I would also get some really good stain/odor cleaner and keep the pee spots cleaned up. You can also buy a urine finder if it's hard to see pee spots on your carpet.

| Rewards work! If they get a treat every time they do their business outside, it doesn't take long for them to realize that they get nothing for accidents in the house. One thing I read over and over is never scold them for accidents in the house. Just be consistent with taking them out often. Crate training is good also, they will not mess where they sleep. I eventually took the carpet out of my downstairs because they seem to be attracted to carpet. We did keep carpet in the bedroom and my older girl has never made an accident in there because that is her bedroom as well. We keep the little one in her crate at night. Since taking the carpet out is not an option in an apartment, I would make sure to get a good spot cleaner with enzymes made for dog accidents. Hopefully that will take away the smell and they will not be tempted to go there again. Good Luck!

Thor's Human Donating Member | I recommend that you get a firm plan in place. Decide if you are going to use a crate, an xpen, have them go outdoors exclusively, outdoors + potty pad, etc. If you haven't potty trained a yorkie before, there are tons of threads here on how to do it. I wish I could say that potty training Thor was simply a matter of deciding that he wasn't going to pee on the rug anymore, but I can't, because that would be a huge lie.

| Here are a couple of things you can do. PLace all dogs on a food schedule, and then always let them out at the same time of day.... to relieve themselves. Your going to need to follow a strict schedule with all your dogs. Or you can you pee pads. Set them up where your dogs go the bathroom most of the time. the pads scented. Use more then one pad. pLace them in different places too, because you have morethen one dog.

| You've gotten some good bits and pieces of advice on this thread, but most everyone it seems is kind of assuming you have been through the other potty training related threads on this forum... Please, definitely go through and read up on the different methods of housebreaking a dog. Scroll through the "training" section of this forum, or do a search for "housebreaking" or "potty training." There is some really really good advice around here once you decide how you are going to proceed, that will definitely save you a LOT of stress and carpet-cleaning work, especially over the long run. Good luck. :-) Lauren & Nikko |
