The YT Potty Log Hi everyone! I thought we should have a thread for those of us in the potty training trenches. We are the ones who buy Nature's Miracle in bulk. We are the ones who have pulled up all the area rugs in our house. We are the ones with tears on our faces, sweat on our brows, diapers on our dogs. Our heads are bloodied, but unbowed. I'll go first. On the goal of thirty accident-free days, Thor and I are back to Day 0. Last night, we were playing indoors. Usually I growl and him and he takes off running. Amazingly, I was literally standing almost on top of him, wondering why he had stopped running for a second. Then he started again and I Knew. I think there's a silver lining in all of this, in that I corrected him (though I did have to catch him first) and took him back to the pad. He's doing extremely well with the pad in my living room, so I think now I need to extend that training to other pads. I also got the grass-scented pads yesterday. They don't smell any different to me, but I desperately hope they smell different to Thor. |
I am definitely in the potty training phase! We have great days and we have HORRIBLE days! The one thing that makes my life not as stressful is that our main living area is laminate wood floors, so clean up is a a breeze! Although it is cold where we live, we are trying to go without using potty pads because our silly cat thinks they are for her and she is peeing there (and other places)!!!! I can't handle two animals peeing everywhere, so we are working on outside pottying only! I would LOVE to go 1 day, let alone 30 days, with an accident! Good luck to all who decided to join this thread! I will certainly need it myself. By the way QuickSilver, your baby is ADORABLE! OMG, I love his coloring! ~~Jenn~~ |
Layla and I are also back to potty training! I have decided after too many area rug incidents, it's time for her to start peeing outside! I have blocked off the kitchen where the area rug is (known to Layla as giant pee pad ) and it turns out she loves going outside! When I ask if she wants to go outside she runs straight to the door :) It's not always potty time, but when it is she gets tons of praise and treats! And she has been faithfully using her pad beside the door when I'm not home. We are patiently waiting on potty bells from bellasmomok to arrive which might make it easier to tell me when she wants out. It has been almost two weeks with just one incident of poop right beside the pad. But the real count starts when I give her access to the kitchen again! :( |
Piper is 9 months old and just when I think she's housetrained she has an accident. Piper never tells me when she has to go so I bring her out every couple hours. When she has pee mistakes it's not that she squats and pees, she does this running dribble. She'll be running down the hall after a ball and I notice she's dribbling the whole way. I guess she can't run and play when her bladder is full. She had a lot of pee accidents in the begining. The vet said she had an immature bladder and she would outgrow it. She very rarely poops in the house only when I don't leave her outside long enough after she pees and I just assume she is done and I bring her inside too soon. She has come a long way from the little puppy who piddled everywhere. We use to call her Piddle Piper. |
i was about to start a similar post. I thought Charlie was potty trained however, today we had two accidents inside. One was in his crate and the other was about 30 mins ago. He was playing and all of sudden stopped...I noticed he was sitting weird on top of his snowman stuff animal..I lifted him up and there he goes..peeing on his snowman and the carpet..argh! Lately we have been having good days with no accidents to bad days with one or two accidents. I wonder if it is b/c I am over working him. He is also very bad at in the morning. He usually can go all night without having to potty however lately he would need to go at random times during the night.:confused: |
Our Lexi at 5mos seems to be doing well, or rather we are. We watch her when loose constantly. One good suggestion we got was to tie her leash or a light weight rope to us at all times where you walk they follow (yea...sometimes ;)) rather then the other way around. |
We're a week accident free now! Before that he peed on his one month anniversary. lol, he showed me. ;) |

Jasmine and I are just in the beginning of potty training..........she is only 9 weeks old. She came home to live with us forever a week ago. She has a big sister of 6 years old to help her, she follows her everywhere. Prissy, her big sister, goes outside with us every two hours during the day and less during the night just like she did when she was a puppy potty training. Oh, the lack of sleep, but oh the joy of a sweet little puppy kisses! Good luck to all the little yorkies and their mommies and daddies. |
Yaaaay! I was playing with Thor indoors again today and he made a piss stop on his pad! We weren't playing at my apartment during yesterday's Incident, so I think it's just a matter of teaching him to use multiple pads. Though again, it would be really nice if he could tell the difference between a pad and a rug... maybe I need to add some pad trays into the mix. We are closing out Day 1! |

Another development for us is the introduction of a fenced-in potty zone, as of today. Earlier I went to the Home Depot and spent $79 I didn't really have so that we could lose the leash. Whether it's with the bell, or with just walking to the door and giving me a "look", he still abuses his outside privileges, and I swear bending down every two minutes to put his leash on or take it off was going to give me a bad back. Not to mention it consumes more time. Between my DH and I, we had the cheapo (but not too ugly, overall) fence up and running in 40 minutes. So far, removing the leash and adding the fence in the pottying equation hasn't caused any regression, but it's only been half a day. I hope it works out... I for one am LOVING not needing the leash every time. We're looking forward to lots of updates from all the other dogs and peoples from the "trenches." It's great to hear from so many people going through the same thing... LOL, kind of like AA but for dogs Addicted to Peeing indoors... I guess that would make it PA? Lauren & Nikko |
Hi all, Oh m god!!! Thank heavens for this thread. I have two little ones, one is 9 months and the other 23 months. Both about 2-2 1/2 lbs. Neither of them is potty trained, and it's not their fault either. When I got my older one, she was 11 months old and the breeder never potty trained her. When I first got her, my 16 yo Merlin was dying, and so was a little piece of me, so he really got most of my attention and i kind of ignored potty training until he passed. Then shortly after that we acquired a rescue, Muffin, at 4 months. I was taking them to puppy training classes when the roof fell in at my house, and then my mom got lung cancer, so we were living in a motel for months, our whole schedule distrupted, and then we were dealing with the lung cancer, so everything else fell aside. Now we are finally back in the house, mom is recovering from surgery and appears to be somewhat stable at this time, so it's back to potty training. Whew! Well I just purchased a covered dog run so I can leave them loose without a leash and they can be protected and run and have fun together. I just started with them this morning with treats because Muffin just recovered from spaying. When I woke them up and took them outside I gave them lots of treats and lots of praise for making wee and poo outside. I was looking for bells that they could ring to tell me they have to go. I saw it mentioned on here but I'm a little lost. Where do I go to get those potty bells? Also, our house is very big. They are primarily in my room and have been messing up my bedroom rug and bathroom at various times. Sometimes they would go on the potty pads, and sometimes they wouldn't. Our kitchen/family room faces the outside backyard where their run is. The sliders in the kitchen go out to the back yard. What do you suggest to transition them from potty pads and my rug, to the outside run? Should I keep them in the kitchen/family room? Should I give them run of the house? It is such a long way from my bed room to the ouside sliders, I just don't know what to do...Should I keep potty pads in the kitchen? Should I continue to keep them in my room, since they don't have run of the house yet? Very confused and welcoming all responses. Sorry for such a long long post, but with two little ones, I am pulling the hair out of my head!!! Help. The plan is to take them out after each meal. Thanks for being there-WHEW! |
Hello again, Day 0. How familiar you are becoming. Thor did exactly what he did yesterday, except instead of peeing on the pad, he peed on the rug. I did catch him and move him over to the pee pad, where he finished up. This is such an emotional roller coaster. Just this morning I was feeling all smug and thinking there was no way we wouldn't clear Day 3. Now, once again, I question if Thor can ever be trained. I hate to say it, but he is just not that smart a dog. Like, he hates having his teeth brushed. Every night, he watches me gather up the tooth brush, the tooth paste, and lets me wrap him up in a towel. Then suddenly he realizes on NO, she's going to brush my teeth! Sad to say, Thor is one of those dogs who coasts by on his looks. |

I'm not exactly in the trenches , Sydney is three and is trained and Chloe is doing well...but while she will go pee on the potty on the pad just fine when she poo's she runs off before she's done to get her treat , so I get one poo on the pad and one poo following behind her and landing next to the pad  How in the world am I suppose to teach a dog to slow down while pooing  Like I said , not exactly trench worthy , but still tired of the one poo on , one poo off routine  Oh , and if I raise the blinds in my living room ( during certain times of the day) the sun comes in it makes a square(ish) bright white shape on the hardwood floor...and you guessed it..she will pee in the middle of that spot like it's a potty pad  and then run to me all happy wanting praise and a reward....nutty dog. |

Whoo! We went to a brand new person's house today and brought Nikko along. He puked once on the drive there and once on the drive home, but he didn't pee or poop inside their house! Admittedly he was always on a leash and within three feet of me in their house, but still... crap I've gotta watch it. We're getting a little frighteningly overconfident, and I'm sure we'll be punished for it soon, lol. Lauren & Nikko |
Hello all!!! Can I join this doggedly determined potty blues group of brave souls? I too am struggling with the potty blues with my two girls, Cassie and Muffin. My girls are being trained at the same time, actually, (very long story.) One is almost two and one is 9 months. Day 1 was yesterday and they went potty in the pen outside twice (I caught them, they did not tell me), and once on the potty pad, (edge of the pad-it's actually on the rug). How many times a day do you think I should take them out? I was thinking three times out and once having them potty on the potty pad (late at night, cold and wet outside). This morning went smashingly. I woke them up about 6:30, grabbed the treats, the towel and marched them out to the newly constructed romper room/potty pen outside. They seem to like it out in the pen and they do seem to know what is expected from them. I just don't seem to know when they are finished. I think I waited long enough before I brought them inside, so I'm hoping they won't go till after breakfast at 9Am when I can catch them about a half hour after eating. I can't wait for the potty bells by Bellasmomok so I can train them to tell me they have to go. toodles, and good luck to all of you today. I'll keep you posted on our progress. Shellie:) |
Welcome, broodizt! I feel like we should have a team song. "I've got the pah-ha-ha-haaaa-tty training blues...." Well, I got my first pimped pee today. :) Thor peed on cue, but he could smell there were more treats to be had. So five minutes later he went back and peed again. It's cute, but I don't want him rationing pee... I want him to empty out so he can run aorund the house leak-free. |
Right on! Thor doesn't seem to be quite as dumb as you say he is... broodizt, I envy those of you who have the guts to train for pads and outside both... and I hope it works out for you too. I'm looking forward to your updates! Lots of updates everybody! Lauren & Nikko |
Well the new baby is doing pretty good. He actually let me sleep 6 hours last nite! That is a first. As for potty training, he seems to be getting it when he needs to urinate, however number 2 is toss-up. I try to make sure every time he gets up from his naps, he is put immediately on the pad. It seems to work, until he starts playing and then it is a free-for-all. OHHHohhh spoke to soon, son just stepped in poop! Ah well, back to the drawing board. |

Thanks Lemonlauren, I hope the dual training works too, although I'd settle for one kind of training just working consistantly right about now. Quicksilver, Thor is too cute, really, cuteness like that should be illegal. How the heck are we supposed to deal with such darn cuteness- without cracking up constantly from their antics? Now my two, Miss Muffin and Miss Cassie, they were awarded the too cute to be real award, and boy do they take advantage of this. Miss Cassie fake pee's all the time just so she can get a treat. Miss Muffin, on the other hand makes so many poops in the back yard, I'm building a pyramid behind their play area. I think she's doing it on purpose, just to wear me down. I'm running out of Pure Bites, and that stuff is EXPENSIVE! They did well this morning, then while visiting with friends this afternoon, Cassie and Muffin decided to take a quick potty break on my Oriental Rug. Back in their room they missed the pad again (just on the edge), but then had success a second time. I try to keep their meal times consistent so that I know then to "catch them", but although I feed them on time, they don't always eat on time. Sometimes they decide to eat hours later, they're just so darn tiny, I don't want them to go without food for long periods of time-especially if they haven't eaten their whole meal. They eat little enough as it is, quarter of a cup between them twice a day. So I free feed at night if they haven't had enough during the day. Makes it hard to keep on top of things. Restarting tomorrow- Day 0 -with renewed commitment and dedication to poop free rugs and laminate floors. Toodles, will keep you all updated. Write Soon. Shellie  |
My name is Shannon and I was conned. Bullied as it were, into bringing home this dogwhowon'tbetrained. I will tell you, she does quite well with her wee pads, she'll have a pissors**t all day long on it nooooo problem. But then open the baby gate into the bedroom and she'll promptly crap on the carpet. Why? Why would a dog rather spend it's life in the bathroom instead of just sticking to the pad? Let me also explain that we live on a bus. It's 40' long by 8 feet wide. The bathroom is about 6x8 so that's where her everything is. Just past the bathroom is the boys bedroom. Lately we've been letting her run in there to play and she loves it but after 2 successful days of her voluntarily going back to the bathroom to piss, she goes and craps in the kids room today. Why??? Somehow I've become her favorite and I baby her much but wouldn't you want the one you love most, to be happy and give you the goods instead of holler and with hold the goods? Now make her stop this and we can all go home!:D |
Hello all! After reading this thread I do not feel so alone. It is nice to hear other peoples stories. Besides Bailey I also have a havanese that I am potty training. Bailey has good days and will even go weeks without an accident and then there are the days she goes out and then comes in and pees on the floor. Shelby my havanese is 4 months and does the best she can being still kinda young. If we stay on top of taking her out she will go outside. They both wake me up during the night when they need to go out. Bailey whines at the foot of my bed and Shelby showers me with kisses. I do have to agree with the others...they know how dang cute they are and they know how to use it...lol. One thing that works well for me is that I give them a treat or a tiny, tiny lick of the nutri-cal when they go potty. Bailey knows she only gets one if she goes potty. Usually she sits pretty and waits for her treat but if she did not go she runs to another room as is if this will make it so mommy does not know. I let her sleep in my bed at night but if I take them out at night and she does not go potty she knows she has to go in her kennel. When she does not go...she runs right to the kennel. I have to say it is kinda cute. I also find that she loves me to be happy that she goes potty by giving lots of luv and praise. I do not say anything when they have accidents I just mumble under my breath so she can hear my tone. You can tell by the look on her face she knows momma is disappointed and she sneaks away and sulks. But I never yell at her. I do say, "potty outside" and I also say it everytime they go outside. So lets see how day 1 goes...lol. |
Hi Shannon, Do you always give her a super special treat whenever she does her business in the right place? They have to have some motivation to pee where you want them to, or else they don't care where they pee - the release of the bladder is enough reward for them, no matter where they happen to do it. So you have to give them something BETTER than just that sweet feeling of release, lol. Also, dogs will decide where their "den" area is, and then anywhere else that is not "den" is considered by them to be a good place to pee. We have to help them realize that OUR HOUSE (or bus, whatever) is their den, and give them their own designated "non-den" place for peeing. Expanding their "den" slowly instead of too quickly helps, and catching them in the act, stopping them, and making them finish up in the "correct" place and treating them immediately afterward helps them to decide where the right place to pee/poo is. This last part is the part that takes the most work - you've gotta watch 'em constantly. And that's why we on the YT Potty Log consider ourselves "in the trenches" lol. Welcome to the ranks! Good luck!:thumbup::thumbup: Lauren & Nikko |
Does any body else have the problem with the dribble pee. I take Piper out about every 2 hours and she always does her business. I basically keep her confined to the kitchen and that's usually where I am. She is a very active little girl and she's always fliting around playing ball toss the toy over your head. Going under the table around always moving. When she has to go she doesn't ask she just starts going back and forth from the slider around table and back to slider. Sometimes I think she's just playing because it hasn't been that long since she's been out. Then I notice she's dribbling all the way around the table. I scoop her up and bring her out and she pees. So her accidents are never a puddle but a line of dribble. It's like she knows she has to go but doesn't know where to go. Why doesn't she just ask to go out? I would gladly just open the door for her. |
Hi all, It's 5 oclock in the morning. After waking up with a massive headache and having to go potty myself- in the dark, I step in a pile of pooh with no slippers on- YUK!!!!!!!!!! (sorry for the obvious gag factor, but I just HAD to tell SOMEONE in order not to be dogacidal.) Actually, it is really not their fault. I fed them too much beef last night, and this is what I get. But why Muffin did it on the rug and not the pooh pads is anybody's guess. I'm sure she is the culprit. I'm not sure why all of a sudden she started pooing on the rug again when I thought she was almost paper trained. I have to call the vet and see if she will let me bathe her, as today is the last day of recovery from her spaying. Say a prayer for me. Shellie:eek: |
Eeeeeeeew. I haven't had the misfortune of stepping Thor's poo (knock on wood), but there are a number of people here who share your experience. You are not alone. I think this is why yorkies are so cute - no other breed would be able to get away with such egregious behavior. |
