Thanks Lauren! I got that from the beginning and stuck with it. I started with the crate but that didn't work for her or me so I gave her the little bathroom. She loves her bed and will go to it. I ALWAYS treat well for good potty practices and she gobbles them up but the second she's let out for playtime, its piss time for Curly! I can't possibly spend my days in the bathroom playing with her, that's no fun. Oh, and she does have accidents in the bathroom too, she's just not all that particular. Usually, when we wake in the morning, there are special treats for us to pick up in the bathroom! Her wee pad is used but there is more on the floor. So yep, I'm down in the trenches with y'all. She is SO lucky she's cute! Quote:

I hate to say this for such a cute little girl in such a cute little dress, but if she is messing in her den / your bathroom, she needs to go to a smaller area. What was wrong with the crate? The most effective thing I've found with Thor so far, not that I can call three accident-free days any kind of track record, was to put him in the crate and not let him out until he pottied. It was a brutal few days - he actually went almost 40 hours without going - but once he figured out that potty was the way to freedom, he got very reliable. Every few hours I put him on the pad and tell him to potty. If he doesn't, he goes in the crate. Result? He potties every time he's on the pad. I assume you mean that Curly doesn't like her crate, and Thor was not crazy about his either. He cried INCESSANTLY for the first day he was in there. BUT, after spending a lot of time in there, he actually doesn't mind it, which is also good for travelling. |
Oh, the first day she hated her crate, but we stuck with it and she was fine thereafter. But she didn't care that it was her den and she pooped in there too. I got tired of taking it all apart and cleaning it every day and it wouldn't matter if she had just gone on the pad. I'd go to let her out and see a terd in there. I just can't get into this crating all day thing. I don't see any joy for the little crappers in life all caged up. It reminds me of those poor mill babies, in a cage all day. Quote:

Are you sure the crate was sized correctly? Some dogs will go no matter what, but most avoid pooping right where they sleep. I don't like the idea of crating a dog all day either, but I'll put Thor in it for a few hours when I'm going out or something. It's made potty training so much easier, I really wish I had started with it. |
We had the smallest one you can get. It's that little pink one you get at petco. She only had room to go in and lay down, no room to play. |
Hm, not sure what to suggest then. Who would have thought that a cutie like that would be such a dirty girl? ;) Thor has officially perfected the micro-pee. He'll go three times in five minutes to get three treats. Why is he showing so much ingenuity in this area, when he's still shaky on "Sit"? On the bright side, I've gotten him to use two different pee pads. I used the another poster's suggestion of cardboard boxes to block off most of my apartment. Keeping my fingers crossed I can let him loose in the kitchen at some point. I am still a little worried because he definitely sniffs before he pees. You know how some people chain-smoke? I chain potty pads. I guess I can always carry a marked pee pad in a plastic baggy, but it would be nice to see some sign Thor knows the difference between a potty pad and the rest of indoors. Oh well, I guess I've got at least 27 more days to figure all that out. |
Well see? Curly is all about the tricks! She can sit, stay, come, lay, roll over, play dead, high five, and drop it and she's really good on each of them! Maybe Thor could teach her not to potty on the floor and Curly can teach him the fun tricks! :P I hope you don't think I'm angry with my pup, I'm not, I just wish I could let her run around and have fun instead of staying in the bathroom! I just don't understand why, when she knows what the pad is for, would she keep going in other places. I know she knows better because she cowers when I catch her and she doesn't get her treat. |
ok since my last post in here on the 26th, charlie and I had been accident free until last night. For some unknown reason he pee in his crate. I took him out to pee...then i had to shower so i put him in his crate..he was in there for only 1 hr and when I let him out to play before bedtime, i noticed a wet spot. I wonder if he is marking inside his crate. |
Thor has gone four days without an accident, knock on wood. AND he's used three of the four pads I've laid out. Yaaay! One new development I'm not thrilled with is that he's started lifting his leg and marking the wall next to the pad. Before, he was squatting to pee. Any advice? Should I tape the potty pad part of the way up the wall, or not reward for leg-lift pees? |
Since my last post the girls have regressed and are now using my rug as a potty pad. Yesterday morning they went outside. So far so good. Then I needed to be at the doctor's all the rest of the day and needed to leave them alone. When I got home, they greeted me, all excited that they had pottied on the rug. I need to rethink this whole deal. i have been free feeding them because they are so very tiny, and have such small stomachs. They like to snack all day and night. They do eventually eat all their food, but there is no schedule when they eat like this- and it is difficult to catch them before a potty. I'm waiting for my potty bells, and I'm going to try to feed them three meals a day. I will leave the food for 20 minutes to an hour on the floor and then pick the rest up and refrigerate, then warm up again and feed for lunch. Then I feed dinner and refrigerate any unused portion after about an hour. I figure their last feeding should be about 5 PM. Does this sound reasonable to everyone? :aimeeyork |
my last food feeding time for charlie is 6:30pm. He is only allow to drink water until 9pm. |
This is getting ridiculous. Thor is going more than a dozen times a day now! And he spends a lot of standing on the potty pad, staring at me wistfully. I have a feeling he thinks the potty pad magically creates treats. I did figure out a way to get him to stop marking the wall, duh. I pulled the pads a few inches away from the wall, and he's back to squatting. This marks the FIFTH potty free day! Whoop, whoop! I do feel like it's too good to be true, and I'm going to find a huge pile of poop somewhere... probably on Day 28. If he's not ready to make it to 30 days, I want him to break down now, so I can start the recount. :D |
Five days! Awesome!!!! He is obviously catching on. We're at three weeks, and I know Nikko definitely still pimps me for treats - He'll "ask" to go outside like three times in ten minutes, especially if the weather's nice, and give me a little squirt of pee each time. I figure oh well, just so long as he's going outside instead of in! And I know what you mean about about wishing for the accident NOW if they're not ready to go for the 30 days. After you get to the two-week mark, you'll really start freaking out. ;) But it's all good - five days is a super accomplishment, and no matter what, at least you've got five days. Talk about progress! Hooray Thor! Lauren & Nikko |
I got the potty bells today. Tomorrow is doctor day so it's not really a good time to start training for outside. Where do you keep Thor all day? Do you keep him by your side? in a bed room? Are you with him all day? Are you able to accomplish anything during the day? Do you keep and eye on him every minute? I've got two of them so it's seems doubly daunting. Any suggestions will be great!!!! Thanks, Shellie Muffin and Cassie:) |
confused?! I have a four month old yorkie and she seems to be confused about where to pee. I take her outside and she plays and runs around but as soon as she gets inside she pees and poops..I've tried to take her out after eating, naps, playing, etc., for an hour or two and she seems to hold it until she gets inside..any advice for this? I also try the whole crate thing but she still doesnt do it and barks so much ...and not to go pee cause i take her out to pee when she barks ...but she doesnt do it so i put her back in and she barks so much that she wakes my neighbors...HELP?! |

Hehe, we had day 1 a few days ago, and then DH stepped in poo  Today is a restart. We've had day1 (again) of no accidents! Crossing fingers!! |
Wow, there have been a lot of poop mishaps recently! I hope this is not a harbringer of things to come. We are closing out Day 7!!!! Assuming we get through tonight, I think I'm going to let Thor back into the kitchen. I feel like I should get him a gift for doing so well. Maybe a big helping of ham. He continues to pee a ridiculous number of times per day. He now potties on the living room pad, follows me to the kitchen to get a treat, and then potties on the kitchen pad to get a second helping. Dorkface. It's mildly creepy when he pees now because he STARES at me very intently the entire time. It's weird to have someone watch you so closely while they pee. But I'll settle for a creepy dog and clean floors. :p |

We are closing day 2 in a row -crosses fingers- |
That's awesome! I've very proud of both of you. ;) It is sooooooo nice not to have to move a cardboard box back and forth every time I want to get a glass of water. If Thor makes it through another week (pleasePleasePLEASE), I think I'll unblock the bathroom. I can't wait! |
Did you start Thor in just one room for freedom and the pad in a different room? I am confused about them not soiling the den or something like that. We have got to do something here with Penny and reading Thor's progress is soooooo encouraging! We need to get Penny to use the pad so we can teach her she gets a treat right now. Should we have the pad and her crate in the same one room? Maybe that is our mistake. Also, I didn't know it was OK for her to hold her poop for 40 hours. I was afraid we would have a vet visit if that happened. We finally let Penny free this evening to poop and pee where she wanted because she hadn't gone since yesterday and I was afraid she would get sick. So I will check back tomorrow morning and see if you found my post. If we need to stay in one room for everything, that is what we will try tomorrow. Tracie & :aimeeyork Penny the Princess |
You know, that's something that's always confused me about potty pads as well. You don't want your pup to pee in his den (your house).... EXCEPT for these couple of little white square spots you lay out inside his den. I dunno, it sounds confusing to me, but mad props to those of you who make it work! Nikko has taken to doing his business not only just outside recently (yay!), but he also does it as far away as possible from our house - in the corner of his fenced in yard that is the furthest spot away from the door we come out of. It's been well over a month now since he has peed even within five feet of the outside wall of our house. I'm taking that as a good sign he's catching on.... And by the way, we are only FOUR DAYS away from a full month!!! I know it's a little ridiculous, but I'm starting to panic a little. I don't know if I could handle it if he had an accident on Day 29, lol. My brains might explode out my ears, cartoon-style. :-) Lauren & Nikko PS: I almost forgot to add: GO THOR!!!!! Pottying in the right places has its advantages, eh? |
Oh my. I am so glad to see I am not alone in this. Just when I think Abby ( 6 months old ) gets it, she has an accident in the house. It just seems like it's one step forward and two steps back.:( She still messes in her crate at night if I don't get to her early enough. Sometimes that mess ends up on her blanket in her crate.:( I'm hoping she catches on pretty soon. |
Well, little Penny woke me up at 2am and 4am and I took her to the bathroom wee pad and she actually went on the pad! Now that we are up and about, I can't get her to go anywhere. We even took her outside for the first time at our house, thinking maybe she would go out there. All she did was :animal37 run and run. She did not pee or poop and it has now been 2.5 hours since she ate breakfast. I keep putting her back in the crate and getting her out to try. I hope she goes soon so that she can play. Here's hoping for success today! Tracie and :aimeeyork Penny |

Now that he's been successful for a week, I've been letting him out of my sight for maybe five seconds at a time. To be honest, yes, it's hard to get anything else done. I find that I'm a lot more productive if he's in doggy daycare. He does spend a lot of the day asleep, though. If I need to go out or take a shower, I crate him. Quote:
However, Thor started peeing on the living room rug several times per day, and I felt like I had no other options. And this was the turning point for us. Once he figured out that he would not be let out of the crate without pottying AND he got a fabulous potty treat, he and his pads got along like a house on fire. My guess is that if your puppy needs to go, she will go. As you can see from other threads in this forum, yorkies are not particularly heroic about pottying - even if they are trained, many won't hold it if they really, really, really need to go. I suggest being very strict with your puppy about pottying on the pad, especially since you say she's used it a few times now. If you are really worried about the poop, I would make her potty on the pad, and then follow her around until she squats to poop. Then interrupt her, take her over to the pad, let her finish, and give her a treat. Also, what are you feeding her? Thor only poops once per day. Depending on her diet, your puppy may not need to poop after every meal. If you want her to go more, maybe give her a few beans with each meal - I'd say one bean / lb, so if she's three pounds, give her three beans. Don't give her much more, because they stimulate digestion very strongly! Quote:
Thor is such a picky little monster, he now feels that ham is not a good enough treat for pottying. He gave me this really disappointed look this morning when he got his treat. That boy drives me crazy! Good point about the den thing, I'm not sure why it works... I guess when the dog is pottying indoors, he doesn't consider the entire place his den anyway, and a dog's sense of territory can expand and shrink. It's very common for dogs to designate an infrequently used room as their bathroom. To answer your question, I have a pad out in any room Thor is allowed into. Sometimes when he is running around, he doesn't make a full potty stop, so he needs to be within 10 feet of a potty pad at all times. I think after another week, I'll start moving the pads around a little bit so he knows the PAD is the key, not the LOCATION. Also, they are all prominently displayed in my house at the moment, and at some point I'd like them not to be. Sorry for the super super long post. I hope this answered everyone's questions! :animal36 |
I just thought I'd let you know that we are on day SIX with ZERO accidents! None, nada, zippity do dah! I've had Curly on a leash and she just follows me around all day unless one of the boys is playing with her or she's eating or sleeping. Each and every time she's had to potty, either I've noticed and taken her or she's tugged me to the bathroom where her pad is, did her biz, and got her treats! She's even started in with the faking it just like I've read others on here doing. Smarty pants! Whatever, fake or not, she's getting it and we're happyyyyyy!!! We've even been letting her run back and forth between the bathroom and the boys room to play for a couple hours at a time and she hasn't tried to squat in the boys room once! YAY Curly Girl!!! |
That's so great!!! I have to admit, from your earlier posts it sounded like she was determined not to be trained, so I'm really happy to hear she's getting it. And remember, in dog days, she's been potty trained for a month and a half. ;) |
LOL, so good we're done then, no? hahaha Well they said ONE month! Ugh, guess not huh. She's asleep on me while I type, she's such a sweetie, I'm so glad she's decided to get with the program. Maybe she just wanted to be with me more or something. I dunno. |
Yay Curly Girl!! I can not wait to post that we have day 1 down! :) Penny went on the pad at 3am and 5am then I figured she had to be on empty so I trusted her before breakfast on our bedroom floor. She left a puddle in front of the sink while I was changing. :aimeeyork She went on the pad after breakfast, and remember the pad is in a small bathroom that we take her to and shut the door. We read or something for 10 - 15 minutes hoping she will go on the pad. She left another puddle in the afternoon on my bedroom floor and then has not gone the rest of the day. She had dinner a couple of hours ago, so we keep taking her every 15 min. hoping for success. Tracie and :aimeeyork Penny |
ParrotLady, I would suggest that you crate her and then just give her five minutes or so outside to potty. If she's getting fifteen minutes outside, there's not a ton of motivation to potty for you. Also, taking her out every fifteen minutes is giving her a lot of freedom. Why don't you try every 45 or so? Keep us posted. :) |
