Thanks Lauren!
I got that from the beginning and stuck with it. I started with the crate but that didn't work for her or me so I gave her the little bathroom. She loves her bed and will go to it. I ALWAYS treat well for good potty practices and she gobbles them up but the second she's let out for playtime, its piss time for Curly! I can't possibly spend my days in the bathroom playing with her, that's no fun. Oh, and she does have accidents in the bathroom too, she's just not all that particular. Usually, when we wake in the morning, there are special treats for us to pick up in the bathroom! Her wee pad is used but there is more on the floor. So yep, I'm down in the trenches with y'all.
She is SO lucky she's cute!

So you have to give them something BETTER than just that sweet feeling of release, lol.

Also, dogs will decide where their "den" area is, and then anywhere else that is not "den" is considered by them to be a good place to pee. We have to help them realize that OUR HOUSE (or bus, whatever) is their den, and give them their own designated "non-den" place for peeing. Expanding their "den" slowly instead of too quickly helps, and catching them in the act, stopping them, and making them finish up in the "correct" place and treating them immediately afterward helps them to decide where the right place to pee/poo is. This last part is the part that takes the most work - you've gotta watch 'em constantly. And that's why we on the YT Potty Log consider ourselves "in the trenches" lol. Welcome to the ranks!

Good luck!

I hate to say this for such a cute little girl in such a cute little dress, but if she is messing in her den / your bathroom, she needs to go to a smaller area. What was wrong with the crate?

The most effective thing I've found with Thor so far, not that I can call three accident-free days any kind of track record, was to put him in the crate and not let him out until he pottied. It was a brutal few days - he actually went almost 40 hours without going - but once he figured out that potty was the way to freedom, he got very reliable. Every few hours I put him on the pad and tell him to potty. If he doesn't, he goes in the crate. Result? He potties every time he's on the pad.

I assume you mean that Curly doesn't like her crate, and Thor was not crazy about his either. He cried INCESSANTLY for the first day he was in there. BUT, after spending a lot of time in there, he actually doesn't mind it, which is also good for travelling.

Oh, the first day she hated her crate, but we stuck with it and she was fine thereafter. But she didn't care that it was her den and she pooped in there too. I got tired of taking it all apart and cleaning it every day and it wouldn't matter if she had just gone on the pad. I'd go to let her out and see a terd in there.

I just can't get into this crating all day thing. I don't see any joy for the little crappers in life all caged up. It reminds me of those poor mill babies, in a cage all day.

Are you sure the crate was sized correctly? Some dogs will go no matter what, but most avoid pooping right where they sleep.

I don't like the idea of crating a dog all day either, but I'll put Thor in it for a few hours when I'm going out or something. It's made potty training so much easier, I really wish I had started with it.

We had the smallest one you can get. It's that little pink one you get at petco. She only had room to go in and lay down, no room to play.

Hm, not sure what to suggest then. Who would have thought that a cutie like that would be such a dirty girl?

Thor has officially perfected the micro-pee. He'll go three times in five minutes to get three treats. Why is he showing so much ingenuity in this area, when he's still shaky on "Sit"?

On the bright side, I've gotten him to use two different pee pads. I used the another poster's suggestion of cardboard boxes to block off most of my apartment. Keeping my fingers crossed I can let him loose in the kitchen at some point.

I am still a little worried because he definitely sniffs before he pees. You know how some people chain-smoke? I chain potty pads. I guess I can always carry a marked pee pad in a plastic baggy, but it would be nice to see some sign Thor knows the difference between a potty pad and the rest of indoors. Oh well, I guess I've got at least 27 more days to figure all that out.

Well see? Curly is all about the tricks! She can sit, stay, come, lay, roll over, play dead, high five, and drop it and she's really good on each of them! Maybe Thor could teach her not to potty on the floor and Curly can teach him the fun tricks! :P

I hope you don't think I'm angry with my pup, I'm not, I just wish I could let her run around and have fun instead of staying in the bathroom! I just don't understand why, when she knows what the pad is for, would she keep going in other places. I know she knows better because she cowers when I catch her and she doesn't get her treat.

ok since my last post in here on the 26th, charlie and I had been accident free until last night. For some unknown reason he pee in his crate. I took him out to pee...then i had to shower so i put him in his crate..he was in there for only 1 hr and when I let him out to play before bedtime, i noticed a wet spot. I wonder if he is marking inside his crate.

Thor has gone four days without an accident, knock on wood. AND he's used three of the four pads I've laid out. Yaaay!

One new development I'm not thrilled with is that he's started lifting his leg and marking the wall next to the pad. Before, he was squatting to pee.

Any advice? Should I tape the potty pad part of the way up the wall, or not reward for leg-lift pees?

Since my last post the girls have regressed and are now using my rug as a potty pad. Yesterday morning they went outside. So far so good. Then I needed to be at the doctor's all the rest of the day and needed to leave them alone. When I got home, they greeted me, all excited that they had pottied on the rug.

I need to rethink this whole deal. i have been free feeding them because they are so very tiny, and have such small stomachs. They like to snack all day and night. They do eventually eat all their food, but there is no schedule when they eat like this- and it is difficult to catch them before a potty. I'm waiting for my potty bells, and I'm going to try to feed them three meals a day. I will leave the food for 20 minutes to an hour on the floor and then pick the rest up and refrigerate, then warm up again and feed for lunch. Then I feed dinner and refrigerate any unused portion after about an hour. I figure their last feeding should be about 5 PM. Does this sound reasonable to everyone?

This is getting ridiculous. Thor is going more than a dozen times a day now! And he spends a lot of standing on the potty pad, staring at me wistfully. I have a feeling he thinks the potty pad magically creates treats.

I did figure out a way to get him to stop marking the wall, duh. I pulled the pads a few inches away from the wall, and he's back to squatting.

This marks the FIFTH potty free day! Whoop, whoop! I do feel like it's too good to be true, and I'm going to find a huge pile of poop somewhere... probably on Day 28. If he's not ready to make it to 30 days, I want him to break down now, so I can start the recount.

Five days! Awesome!!!! He is obviously catching on. We're at three weeks, and I know Nikko definitely still pimps me for treats - He'll "ask" to go outside like three times in ten minutes, especially if the weather's nice, and give me a little squirt of pee each time. I figure oh well, just so long as he's going outside instead of in!

And I know what you mean about about wishing for the accident NOW if they're not ready to go for the 30 days. After you get to the two-week mark, you'll really start freaking out. But it's all good - five days is a super accomplishment, and no matter what, at least you've got five days. Talk about progress! Hooray Thor!

I got the potty bells today. Tomorrow is doctor day so it's not really a good time to start training for outside. Where do you keep Thor all day? Do you keep him by your side? in a bed room? Are you with him all day? Are you able to accomplish anything during the day? Do you keep and eye on him every minute? I've got two of them so it's seems doubly daunting. Any suggestions will be great!!!! Thanks, Shellie Muffin and Cassie

Confused confused?!

I have a four month old yorkie and she seems to be confused about where to pee. I take her outside and she plays and runs around but as soon as she gets inside she pees and poops..I've tried to take her out after eating, naps, playing, etc., for an hour or two and she seems to hold it until she gets inside..any advice for this? I also try the whole crate thing but she still doesnt do it and barks so much ...and not to go pee cause i take her out to pee when she barks ...but she doesnt do it so i put her back in and she barks so much that she wakes my neighbors...HELP?!
