I'm hopeless... I dont know what to do anymore.... Roxy is driving me crazy.... What is a good age to start crate training a puppy. I leave my house at about 6:45am and return at about 4:15pm.... Within that time she is in a play yard with her food, bed and wee wee pad... BUT when I get home and I wanna clean her area because I refuse for my apt to smell like dog. I put her in the kennel and she crys like someone is trying to kill her... Am I doing something wrong by letting her sleep in a bed next to me instead of a kennel? Is it already to late... Last night I put her bed in the kennel and opened the kennel and let her sleep in the bottom half so she can get use to it.. Was that a good choice.

| Hello! How old is your puppy? If she is still really young, she just isnt used to being put in the crate because she is out all day. If you want her to start sleeping in her crate at night, then I would start now, so she can adjust to knowing that when it is bed time, that is where she will be going.

She will be 11 weeks tomorrow. I know she is still a baby thats why I leave her confined in a play yard instead of the kennel. What should I do with the kennel then put her in there during the night when I'm home. I want to get her on a schedule like a pee pee and poo schedule is there a way to do that? I take her food away at 8 I think she's realized that already because its 7:55 and shes eating whatever she can LOL!!!

It all depends what works for you. If it is working with her sleeping next to you and you don't mind, go for it. I don't think there is a right or wrong for sleeping...just safety! As far as putting her in her kennel so you can clean, she just has to get used to the kennel. Try putting a treat in there with her while you aren't cleaning but stay right there with her so she gets used to the idea. Just a few minutes at a time. If she c ries, wait til she stops to let her out becasue you don't want to reward her for crying, she will always do it! There are times for safety reasons, she has to be in there, so she has to get used to it! When I clean Daisy's area after work, she is so excited to see me that she is climbing all over me! I usually put a treat in her mini kong to keep her busy while I clean, after giving her love of course!!

I have yet to buy the kong thingy.... But I am def going to try that while I'm cleaning today.. The obly problem with giving her a treat is that since she is so small I give her soft treats since its hard for her to bite on hard treats... Or is it better to give her hard ones that way it takes longer? What do you all think?

I buy the Iams puppy biscuits, you can perfectly wedge one end in the kong. I just make sure I read the package, some say for dogs over 5 lbs. and mine only weighs 3lbs. Daisy only eats dry food so I figured the biscuits would be ok for her since she is used to the harder consistancy. She actually tosses it around and plays with it a while before eating it. I do give her the chewy treats when I comb her though, otherwise that is a wrestling match!!!

Yeah thats what I meant chewy treats.. Its one actually that the trainer suggested she said they use them for the dogs when they train.. She also suggested putting peanut butter or yogurt in the kong and freezing it.. And they lick for hours LOL!!!! I'm gonna have to try something Thanks again.

we got Madison at 5 mos and she likes bones. We have the bully sticks and other tendon type bones. ( NO RAWHIDE) and she loves choosing which one she's gonna chew today or which one she's going to hide. But she really likes these bones and they keep her occupied for hours. maybe try a favorite toy or bone and put in the crate leave the door open and let her meandor in on her own. madison goes in and out of her crate on her own now. I think the key is consistancy and making the crate not be a place of punishment. Last edited by scentlady; 02-16-2009 at 07:21 PM.

My Cleo is in a puppy pen during the day while i work. She has a pee pee pad on one end, food and water in the middle, and her bed on the other end. At night she goes in her kennel. I throw a treat in there and she runs in after it and i close the door behind her. The kennel is right next to my bed so she doesn't think that she is alone. The first night she cried for abou 15-20 minutes and then realized that she wasn't gonna win that battle. Every night it took less time for her to calm down and now there are no cries. I have only had her since last friday (2/6) and she is about 9 weeks old. I also put in a shirt that i have worn in there so that she has my scent with her to help her feel like i am right there.

heeheehee ...you still gotta a bitty baby... Mine didn't have free run of the house until they were 1.5 yrs old. They were contained in a small room with all their stuff. Everyday when I came home from work, I had to clean a mess, no getting around that...actually they are 4 yrs old now, and everyday I come home from work and clean a mess I never did the crate thing so I can't help you on that one. You are gone for a good number of hours, so I think leaving her in the xpen with pee pads is the route you should go
