How can I get my baby to quit chasing cows!!! - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Help! My Jack has picked up a very bad habit from our outside dog...chasing cows! I am so afraid he's going to get stomped on. He's teapot size 16.4 lbs. But that's not the point. What should I do? We put our outside dog Heidi on a zip line so she would quit chasing cows and cars! But before we did Jack picked up the terrible habit. The more you call him the more he does it. Do you think if we totally ignored him that he would stop? I just hate that he does it!

Also, he threw up 4 times last night

. My kids told me that he got a hold of a mole and a squirrel. Our outside dog did the hunting and I guess Jack did the eating. He's fine now that it's all out of his system. Does anyone elses yorkie eat nasty things like that?

if you want us to stop chasing your cows, give us ice cream. we know ice cream comes from cows. the secret is out. if you see us chasing cows all we r doing is trying to get there ice cream.

LMAO!!!! We use ice cream for most of of training.

OK..well y'all made me LOL

. But that doesn't help. Also, I had no idea that people give their yorkies ice cream. That's interesting. However, I don't give my baby human food.

That is funny. All 16 lbs of him chasing those cows. I bet the cows are just terrified of him (he he he). I don't blame you though wanting to find a way to stop him. I would fear he would get hurt as well.

Mine only gets A little ice cream. thats all the people food the get. You could try putting on a long lead and when he goes for the cows give a tug and tell him no. We had to do this for our horses. Muffy would get all excited when they would run so I tried this and after a few weeks she gave up on the horses. We also gave her a treat when she wasnt going after the horses. I hope this helped.

i agree with Susie Q, use a leash on your baby and tug , if your cattle are bred, once they start calving they'll turn on him as i sure you know

Since you've already gotten good advice I just have to tell you that the title of this thread cracked me up.

I'm not a country girl so it's unexpected in a funny way. I'm glad little Jack is feeling better though.

My kids would chase the horses if they had the chance -- another risky business. My best suggestion would be to not let your Jack outside off leash until he has learned some basic obedience commands including SIT, STAY, COME, DOWN. Once he learns these commands you should be able to recall, and/or have him sit/stay, etc. Remember learning a command means that he will follow the command without fail whenever asked.

What an interesting mental picture.

Always think of Yorkies as house doggies. The idea of one of these elegant little doggies chasing a cow and it running in terror is quite humorous.

Could be mighty dangerous, though.

make him a dog yard so he cannot get out and run after the cows.. that is a scary thought of what cows could do if they wanted to...I am a farmers daughter and lived on a farm when I was young.. that way a yard can control him for you...
Not sure if that helped or not.. but dogs yards are a good safety feature...

I'm from Jacksonville, FL which used to be called South Georgia so I am very familiar with both G.R.I.T.S. and grits... mmmm, grits (with cheese)

. Just more beachside so not so many cows.

Actually Jack is a house dog. He only goes out and chases cows when we get home from work/school. I believe he thinks he's doing a good deed

by protecting us even though the cows are in a field next to our house and the cows don't belong to us. He is such a mess...
