Housebreaking-how do you "punish" after accidents?

I do it the old fashion way. Never punish if I don't catch, but, when I do catch them, I put their nose down by it, tap on the butt(not hard) change the tone of my voice tell then NO, you pee on the paper, and take them right to the pee pad. The last one I got was trained in less than 2 weeks.

You don't have to do all that. You can easily train a dog without rubbing their nose in it and tapping them. Doing that can cause them to be afraid and could also set them back. I trained Chip in less than 2 weeks without all that.

put their nose down by it? what does that work for?

i think if you are consistent just taking them to the right place and praising them after they eventually will learn and never forget

You DON'T rub their nose in it, you put it down by them, it's worked for 50 years and never had a dog afraid or ever set them back. None of my dogs are afraid of me, none of mine bite me or anyone else

Because they see what they did and with the tone of your voice, they know it's wrong. I've been very successful in housebreaking

I think I'm just going to agree to disagree. If you catch them in the act all you have to do is a stern no and they associate their action, with the no, then take them to their pad. Then when the do good, you reward them and they associate peeing on the pad with reward. It's worked for us and a lot of other people.

yeah, about that hitting yourself for not watching, so true, if your prepared to let him/her roam the house you will have to keep an eye on him/her at all times, otherwise it may pee somewhere that you don't know and you may step in it like an hour later and by that time if you try to reprimand the dog he won't know why and that will start to create bad habits and will be harder to undo, so like if u sit to watch a movie put her in a crate or on the leash if u know u don't want to have to get up in the middle of it, you have to be able to watch for signs of him wanting to go so you can take him to his pad or outside or if you catch him you can reprimand him right away and take him to his pad. -- with my dog she usually starts sniffing around or will whine, if i ignore that then sure enough i will step in her accident later

I'm really sad to hear that anyone is still doing this; there are equally effective methods. Why the "tap", what possible good could that do? If it's hard enough to make them feel like they did something wrong, it could not only hurt them, but also make them fearful of your hands. If it's soft enough to not hurt them it won't be good enough to alter their behavior anyway. Most people admit the "tap" is just for their own benefit to get out their own frustration.

Hurt them? I would never hurt any of my dogs. I barely tap them, they've never even let out a yelp. You do what's effective without hurting them

"If it's soft enough to not hurt them it won't be good enough to alter their behavior anyway."



You can alter behavior through what scientists call discomfort; a neutral stimulus (the tap) will not alter behavior. Your disapproval is really enough discomfort to offer, they can sense your feelings.

You housebreak your way, I do mine my own way(without ever hurting my dogs). Do you have children? If so, did you ever spank them when they were bad? If you don't have children, when you do, are you going to let them do whatever they want and think time out might work?? give me a break

I Never Yelled or hit my Dog's when potty Training They were Potty Trained Right Away With Just Positive training.

I see that I have upset you, I wasn't trying to criticize you, just thought you and others might like to know what actual research shows. Yes, I have children, and no, I did not spank them, time out does work, your goal should be to let the child know that their behavior isn't acceptable, without making them feel like they are "bad people". Spanking tends to reduce the poor behavior when the punisher is around, but when children are away from the punisher the poor behavior resumes. By the way, I have two wonderful grown sons of whom I'm extremely proud. There is a great deal of research in the area of learning and behavior, for humans and animals, and some people are interested in what the research shows us.
