| Help!!!!!!! House Training Disaster My yorkie refuses to pee/poop where he is supposed to. He is now 11 months old! Sometimes he does it where he is supposed to (rarely), sometimes he does not. He appears to know that it's wrong, because after he does the 'deed' he's got that guilty/scared look. And he always waits until no one is around and makes a mess or he'll just quickly sneak a leak in the corners, when we can't see him. help me!!!!!! I'm so tired of the smell and constant pee cleaning What am I doing wrong? If he does it where he isn't supposed to and I actually catch him, I say "no! bad pee pee" and if he does it in the right place, I say "good pee pee!" and if I can get a treat quick enough, I give it to him. Every morning and night I try and make him do it in the same spot, and during the day he just does it all over. I read somewhere that yorkies never fully learn - is that true? Help meeeee, please! |

| I'm sorry....I know it can be very frustrating ! You may have to go all the way back to the beginning and start at square one again. Does he go outside or on potty pads ? If you take him outside , you may have to go back to the puppy schedule. Taking him out every two hours or so , and if your not home confining him to a play yard. What I did for my other dog ( our Yorkie uses pee pads inside while Sydney goes outside, she's bigger ) was use potty pad inside and outside so she knew what to do when I took her outside and where to go if she couldn't make it outside. She knew when I took her to the pad what it was for. Then we gradually made the inside pad smaller until she only has the one outside (that she could see ) and she knew she was suppose to use it so she would let us know she wanted out and she would use it ( and we still kept taking her out regardless every 3 hours or so) ...then we started making that one smaller too , until she just using potty outside with no pads. It took a good 6 months or so to get her to that point that I would say she was reliable to not have accidents and really knew what she was to do. I also suggest keeping treats on you at all times. I used a little nylon travel bowl w/ strap to keep them with me so I Could give her one every time right away...that worked wonders for me. She loves her some treats !!!! It gets annoying so I just strapped them thru a belt loop. My Yorkie is only 8 mo. old and she is my first one so I have no idea about the Yorkie " never fully getting it" part. Chloe did very well , so I think they can get it , they may just be more stubborn about "when " they choose to use their knowledge

| Thanks chloesMama. Looks like it's back to square one! I live in an apartment and have an enclosed tiled balcony area, where I have two huge garden trays in which I put the pee pads - so he's supposed to do it outside the house, but it's not a garden. He seems to poop in them more regularly than he peeing. He finally stopped peeing in the apartment - but does it ALLLLL over the balcony! Everywhere and anywhere.. Which causes such foul smells And when we go downstairs in my block's garden area to play, he pees all over to mark his territory and poops if he feels like it. Do you think taking him to a trainer will help? Can they assist with house training older dogs? |

| I think trainers can help in any area. I think he is peeing/pooping in the play/garden area just because he smells the other dogs. Is it not allowed to do it in that area ? If it is allowed as long as you clean up after him , then I don't think it would be a problem . If it's not allowed maybe taking him for a walk before the garden area would help. Or maybe you could try taking a pee pad with you and letting him go on it in the garden area, if anything it may just reinforce the pad training at home. Good luck

| Has he been neutered? Neutering usually makes males easier to potty train. It lessens their urge to mark their territory everywhere, and I've found that my two became more manageable after they were neutered.

| Take heart!! There's hope yet. My yorkie is almost 11mos and I had almost given up hope. She knew to go outside, but still went in the house whenever she felt like it. I recently started confining her to a smaller area while we were gone and miracles happened. She now holds it till we come home and comes to us when we're home and she needs out. I think she just felt that she had plenty of room in her home and could always find some place out of the way to potty. I know, everyone on here says to confine them but I just felt so guilty not giving her running room! I gratefully stand corrected! Of course, she's a fixed female and I'm sure there's something to the fixed male theory also.

| 3 Year old Yorkie - Help with Training I have a 3 year old Yorkie who is the love of my life. The problem - he is still going in the house when we are not home. When we are home, he scratches at the door and we let him out. I have started crating him again, but he goes in the create. He is on a special dog food for allergies. His stool is always runny (which is not pleasant to clean up). Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. My husband is at wits end. |
