| I want to teach sit and sit and stay Any helpful advice? Do you say sit, help them sit, and then reward, then keep practicing until he does it? By searching YT, I found a thread that someone shared this link: Dog Tricks! Shake, Crawl, Beg, Kiss, Roll Over, Bow, and more!. I don't see sit and/or sit and stay. Any good training books that you can't live without? Thanks!

| Hi! I'm fairly new at this myself. My boyfriend just adopted a puppy for me from a lady who didn't have time for a puppy. I just taught my little Sylar to sit so I'll give my two cents. I got him Friday and I taught him starting Saturday a little. Just do a few minutes each day and he should get the hang of it. Use treats. In the beginning I would give him a nudge to put his bottom down and say "sit" while I did it and praised him. Eventually I was able to hold the treat near his nose and raise it a little while saying "sit" and he now recognizes it. I'm still working on teaching him a lot (major priority is potty training)! Best of luck to you! |

| ok... I've been working with Noah for about a week now doing the same as above. Now when I get a treat, vitamin or his food he says automatically. The staying part is where I'm having trouble b/c he loves to be at my side every second. |

| I teach that sit means plant your butt on the ground until I tell you other wise and do not break it up. I did for my first dog break it up and now sit mean sit until you think you can move. So teach sit and then gradually just lenght the time you go from the planet the butt part to the click and release part and say a word like all done or relaese not ok to move off a sit. You build it up slow so the sit and the release is little by little longer and always go back now ang again to a shorter time so they do not get that after the count of ten they are free to go. Then get a long as 10 minutes at a time but building slowly. JL
