Hi! I'm fairly new at this myself. My boyfriend just adopted a puppy for me from a lady who didn't have time for a puppy.
I just taught my little Sylar to sit so I'll give my two cents. I got him Friday and I taught him starting Saturday a little. Just do a few minutes each day and he should get the hang of it. Use treats. In the beginning I would give him a nudge to put his bottom down and say "sit" while I did it and praised him. Eventually I was able to hold the treat near his nose and raise it a little while saying "sit" and he now recognizes it. I'm still working on teaching him a lot (major priority is potty training)!
