Would I look stupid?

No is just a word that unlike we humans can translate from No to what ever fast... remember dogs language is not ours.

I had to educate the gang here when we moved to stop Noing the creatures.

NO what ???? finally I hearing out, back, sit, stay, off, not a NO!!!!!
I had to make sure that I did not catch the Nos from them. That was tough I just about cracked.

I have critters that are functioning on a whole other level again and are listening and doing as ask cause it an action word given not a NO stop word.
Just a thought.. yes a differnt way to look at it.
No it does not make what you do wrong it is a differnt train of thought to look at.

We all tend to No way to much even our kids... and even more importmant ourselves.

I think it's a great idea. Use the water bottle since it worked last time, and maybe have a little baggie of yummies, for when he does do a good job?

You are right the word "no" can lose effectiveness if used too often for every little thing. I use No for barking and when he was younger biting. During training sessions, I never use the word no, but I use the word uhg uhg, (how do you spell that?) This word, has no negative connotations, it just means he won't be rewarded for that behavior, and to try something else. The other things you mentioned, words can be substituted for No, and you can use the word "Down" or "leave it". If you have children in the house, where, No is a frequently used word, either by you or them, you might want to substitute another word for you main, "No" word. I have learned that words have way less meaning to Joey than hand singles, he seems to read very subtle movements of my hands, and I wish had taught myself which hand movements meant what in the beginning. He now will stop barking when I place my finger to my lips in a shhh'ing gester. I should add, that I do use the word No in combination with another word, like "no bark" or "no bite."

Great glad this came across just like I had hoped.. I see I am having a bad day with that losses and lose and Loose....again. humm. I do not think I will ever get them right

I to use ugh ugh for a stop action it is a mild interuptor and in true clicker your not to use that... humm I missed that briefing page.. hehe.
I can get the stop action I need to slip in a reward for not chasing the cat, I am ok with that as I train the leave her by you big dumby she not a chew toy.... leave it really.
But in my head I saying not nice things.

I do not use no with human kids as I hate to hear it back.
Got a two years old screaming No at you, you had better beleive she heard the no from someone to stop action.
I say things like I rather you not do that please. or now is not the time. Or can you rethink that. or that may not be a wise idea or I do not think so. ( (this one is no with a lot of word and I have heard it back at me )

If I pull out a NO I have childern looking at me like I have horms and a tail and wonder why I so upset cause I just never use it. No is a final and they stop moving as there is no doudt if used it I am going to debate it.

This is an excellent post. Thank you!! I used this same concept with my skin kids - it is amazing how many times a mother - especially a full-time stay at home mom - says the word no. It was amazing how much their behavior improved when I stopped saying NO and started saying YES whenever possible. So I definately believe that the same holds true for our furkids.

I use NO and BAD Dog for only a few issues. It is amazing that the guilty puppy usually KNOWS that it is him/her I am talking to.

So yesterday I brought him into PetSmart with a gentle leader and some treats. He did better than usual, but I tried to distract him with treats and he was not even interested. He just turned away. He suprised me though cause he was walking nicely past this one dog and then the dog growled viciously at him and Smokey jumped away all scared and usually he would go into a barking frenzy.

Well there you go he is afraid and a good offence and making the dog run away is better then a fight.
So he barks in fear for his life and in a gentle leader he feels he has no choice but to run and hope you keep him safe.

He needs some good confidence building skills.

eye contact and settle in place and look it a dog look at me be a great start point.... Control Unleash is a great resouce for tricks to train to help this concern.
