| Exercise Pen and Pee Pee Pads.... Hello, I am a new mommy to my 13 week old little girl, Kendall, who I LOVE to death. I have a question....PLEASE help. Kendall is very good about using the pee pee pad when she's in her exercise pen, especially at night, but when I let her out to play in the bedroom or living room, even though a pee pee pad is out...she doesn't go on them, like she does when she's in her exercise pen. Any suggestions? Thanks so much! |

| Hi there fellow MD'er. At 13 weeks old, her attention span is very, very short. You will have to watch her like a hawk to prevent accidents. If you know the signs of her getting ready to potty, just pick her up and put her on her pad. I always gave a little treat after they used the pad to reinforce it. Especially if they used the pad or remotely got close to using it. You just have to be very diligent in making sure she knows where the pad is. I have also put a pad else where to make sure that they could find it but the only problem with that is that once they get used to it in one place, they may continue to go there regardless of having a pad down or not. Good luck! Also, sent you a pm.

| Holly is 10 months. She only uses her pee pad in her ex-pen if she is gated in the same room as the ex-pen. I am being consistent as heck with her. When she first wakes in the morning, I take her downstairs and put her in her ex-pen on the pee pad to potty. I don't know why she is not generalizing this yet but she is not. I hear some Yorkies are just difficult in this regard! You do have your baby's young age on your side. Just be consistent.

Mariah is now about 7 months old and is pee-pad trained. She is in an x-pen while we are at school/work during the day and anytime we can't closely supervise her. We put her x-pen in the kitchen which is centrally located in our house. She usually only has access to the kitchen and family room when loose. When we were first pee-pad training her we would let her out of her pen and closely supervise her. We began by taking her back to her pen & pee-pads every 30-45 min to "go potty". We actually set a timer so that we didn't forget. We would walk her back to the x-pen and put her in her pen and close the door. I would then sit on the floor next to the pen and tell her to "go potty". Eventually she would go and I would immediately tell her "good girl, going potty, etc" give her a treat and lots of praise then let her back out. We would follow this routine every 30-45 min or anytime I suspected she had to go. If I could not closely supervise her I would put her back in the pen. Eventually we got to the point where we coaxed her to go in the pen by herself and then told her to "go potty". She would pee on the pad every single time (on command) and then we would hugely praise and give a treat! It worked really, really well! Very quickly she learned to go during these times (although she has never pooped “on command” she didn’t have any accidents either - she seemed to go during the day or night while contained in her x-pen). It got to the point where we coaxed her to go into her pen by herself and with the door open she stayed in there and "went potty"! This process took a couple of weeks. Eventually we got to where the point where she was totally pee-pad trained. Now when she is loose her x-pen door stays open - and completely on her own - she goes in and does her business. We are now training her to also go outside. To help with the process we have put a collar with a bell on it to keep track of her – which really helps, as she is really active. We don’t use the collar to hook her to a leash or anything – we also use a harness for that purpose. It’s important to keep them contained in a smaller area and closely supervised – this is why at 7 months she still only has access to the kitchen and one other room. I hope this helps! Good Luck! | |

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | You know the most effective way I have tried with yorkies is when they are babies to have pee pads all over. They are like toddlers in that they wait right till the last minute when they cant hold it anymore because they want to play. I slowly remove one pad at a time as they hit the correct place and eventually had them going where I wanted. It worked with mine and all the puppies Ive had, in fact when my puppies left for their forever homes they were about 90% potty trained. I did have to confine it to one room though, and you have to be willing to have your house look messy for awhile. |
