Senior Yorkie Talker | Lucky's squirting problem.... Hi everyone! I'm new at this so I hope I'm doing it right. Anyway I have a 10 pound, 1 1/2 old yorkie named Lucky. I take him out to pee in the mornings when we wake up, in the afternoon and at night before we go to bed. Not to mention the little walks that we go on every day. He seems to have a problem with squirting every time he gets excited. Like when we get home I have to swing the door open and let him meet me outside, otherwise he leaves a bunch of drops all over the carpet. The same thing happens when I go to pick him up or even if he knows he's done something bad and I say his name with dissapointment. Or even when I call him and he's being stubborn, he'll roll over on his back and just as I go to pick him up he squirts. I'm tired of having to cleaning my carpet all the time. I feel like I can't keep up with all the spot cleaning! I'm going crazy! When does it stop? What can I do? |

| There are wee-wraps that quite a few member sell. Look at the siggy and you should come across someone. There are also ways to avoid this problem. I'll do a bit of research and see if I can come up with some ideas. Ta-ta for now.

| Okay, here is something that I found: SUBMISSIVE URINATION Depending on whether it's just a puppy problem or behavioral problem: That's a tough one. We had one, but that problem was one of many. But I did do a lot of reading on that. Among what I learned was to never acknowledge them when coming in. Simply brush past them and ignore them until the "moment" is over. Then you can greet them when they are calmer. Never ever correct them for it. From what I read, submissive urination is something that dogs do in the wild when meeting other dogs to show they mean no harm and are no threat to their place in the dominance chain. That being said (had to work on this with husband!!), if they are corrected, they think that you have seen them as a threat and will only piddle MORE trying to convince you that you're wrong and that they are NOT a threat. So even getting stressed out or exasperated by the problem can lead to more peeing. Another trick we learned is to never greet, talk to, or acknowledge from a standing position. Again, they can see this as a need to show you that you are indeed the pack leader and they mean no harm.

| I know the reason he is doing it when you get home is because he gets overexcited! I know they have small bladders so can't hold it for too long. When you're not there, do you leave the puppy pads for him in case he has to go? I leave my Romeo when I'm at work and by the time I get home, he's used it a couple of times. Maybe others on this forum will have more suggestions Malia

| http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ing-crazy.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...nt-peeing.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...arrassing.html I've just given a few threads that discuss submissive urination. There are many, many more. You are not alone in your frustration. I'm also with you on this topic. My 1.5 yr. old male, Chipper, has just stared this. He gets way too excited. I try to stop people from talking or looking at him but quite often it is too late. Boooooo. Not happy, either.

| Yes, it sounds like submissive urination. Poor thing can't help it. There are ways to lessen it, but it doesn't usually go completely away. A belly band would sure save you a lot of frustration. Let me know if you want me to make you one. See the link in my signature.

| My Baxter had this problem for the first 2 years of his life. He's now 3 and has outgrown it. I understand your frustration. Belly bands helped a lot, also ignoring him when he got over-excited. Eventually he realized that he wouldn't get attention until he calmed down. Good luck.

| What I understand it to be is that it is fairly common behavior . Submissive urination when a dog gets very excited . I hope the suggestions and links will help .
