| My pup is defying all things normal! I am new to yorkie talk as I have just gotten a yorkie pup about a month ago. He is 17 weeks old right now and absolutely will not start to housebreak. I love him to death but am at a crossroads with what to do next. The problem: He doesn't care to pee and poo in his crate at all. He pees outside everyonce in a while but still goes on the floor, bed etc. WILL NOT poo outside unless he is carried out of the house mid poo action. When we got him the breeder said he was paper trained so we tried pee pads for about 4 days hoping we could move them outside eventually. He just played with the pee pads/newspaper. Sometimes peeing on them and poo on the floor or pee on the floor poo on the pad. Or he would just miss completely. We nixed that idea and decided to go strictly to crate training and outside. BUT he goes in his crate without a care. I have tried making his crate smaller, he only has room to lie down. I have left him comfy towels and toys to be with him in the crate but he covered up his defecation witht the towel. So I have been trying nothing in the crate at all and all he does is waller in filth. I take him outside to the same spot each time treat him when he pees outside and make big deal out of it. I have taken some of his feces outside to his pee spot in hopes it would spark something and NOTHING! Two or three times we have spent an entire day outside thinking he would have to go at some point and he'll hold it untill 11:00 pm when we come inside and do it on the floor when I turn for two seconds. We clean up all messes with a pet enzyme cleaner. He is on a pretty regular schedule. I know he can hold his bladder and bowl movements because he does so when he wants to...but at night he goes in his crate. Help I don't know what to do! Every book I read says they won't go in their crate but this guy is impossible. I'm sick of starting my morning with a dog bathing session and poo clean up. It's a good thing he's cute as pie! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | This is what worked for me with one of my puppies, but I was pee pad training. I had half the dog playpen with her bedding and the other half with a pee pad and during the time she was out she could get in and out of the playpen to get to her pad and she trained really quick. Good Luck they all eventually get it

| animal36 It good to start training him at this point about other commands. Sit. No Small stuff lie that so he understand that you the boss and he needs to keep you happy Be real carful about how much he eats. When you feel him give him only as much as he will eat in 30mins. I would start switching him over to dry food if he’s not already. If you crate is just big enough for him to sleep in that’s step one. But seeing is u know he going to pee in thee crate it best to catch in on the act. When you do.. Shout out what ever command you use to scold him.(This is where that pervious training comes into play) Make sure it’s Loud. not in his ear but it should be Really Loud and Unexpected. Personally i prefer to make certain sound to help my dog know he is doing something i disapprove of. The ideal is to distract in mid stream. When that happen rush him outside and wait there at his pee spot for a good five mins even if he doesn’t pee but if he dose really praise him. We use to have the same problem you did but he has grown out of it. but when ever well leave his bowl out to long he has the occasional relapse |

| Welcome to the forum! Here are two articles I have written about house training and crate training: House training (scroll down for success tips.) LDT House Training Crate Training: LDT Crate Training Success Tips If you take your pup out to potty and he doesn't go, put him back in the crate for 15 mintues and then take him back outside. Repeat until he goes potty. Every time he starts to poo or pee, say "go potty" and gently praise. (Do this in the area you want him to potty.) Eventually, you will be able to say "go potty" and he will go on command where you set up his potty area at. Good luck! |

| Thanks! It's encouraging for me to get on here and read that others have gone through this too. I just keep telling myself he WILL learn someday. I do monitor how much he eats and for how long.....I haven't really been doing it with water though because I feel bad thinking he might be thirsty. Should I restrict water too? |

| Well thats what we do. However, if its a hot day or if he has been real active we let him have some. but we never give him 24 hour access to it. Just keep in mind you have to keep a close eye on him and during the eary yrs he shouldn't have so much space to roam around on his own and leave unwanted presents. |

they say with puppies you need to take them out every 2 hours and give them a small treat everytime they pee and poop outside and praise him. They also make a spray for the pee pads that is suppose to help train them to use it.. they sell it at pet smart. But so you know Yorkies are on the top 5 hardest breeds to housebreak. Mine STILL has some issues but not major ones.. he has more of a bladdar issue where he pees when he gets excited, | |

| my yorkie was very nearly house broken when i got him, he's just about 18 months now. He's only gone in his kennel once, but i believe that was because he didn't go outside when he had been taken on a walk, and was crated for the rest of the night so he wouldn't have an "accident" in the house. There have been no other crate-accidents since. My lab however, we've had since she was eight weeks old and potty training was going about the same with her, getting up every morning to poo everywhere. One day, when we'd had enough of it, she was actually left in the mess for a few hours while we went about our day. That stopped the going-in-the-crate issue, FAST. People may think we're mean for using those particular methods, but we only had to do it once. I believe that its a dominance thing, telling your dog where and when to potty. And cleaning them as soon as you notice the mess may be counter productive. And, just for the sake of sakes.... i'm no expert! |
