| What can you teach a young puppy? I have a 8 1/2 week old yorkie. Her puppy training classes do not start until september when she will be 5 months old. I am currently potty training her of course and I am teaching her to follow me outside and she is doing a good job. I give her lots of praise. What are some other things I can begin working on either now or at least before she is 5 months? (She seems to respond with praise, doesn't like treats as of yet.)

| Oh my goodness. They love to learn and are fast at it too. Your baby is still so young. Potty training her would be the first thing. Sitting would be second. Don't expect too much at this point from her. Consentration is needed and puppies have to many other things going on at this young age. Perhaps at three months I would start with sitting. Then sit and stay. Then down, then down and stay. That should do it before puppy classes begin. The tricks are endless with these guys. They love to please. Good luck, |

| I agree that potty training is item number one on the training to-do list. By three months, your dog should have the smarts to do sit, down, stay, and some other basic commands. How quickly they learn is really just a function of how often you train them and how consistent you are in your technique. I have trained a few dogs (though I'm in the process of training my first Yorkie puppy). I was taught (and am a big believer in) the nothing-comes-free training technique, where EVERY possible thing your dog likes can be withheld until he or she executes a command. For example, have him sit before he gets every meal, have him lay down before he goes into his favorite room, have him sit and stay before he gets his favorite toy. Not only does this help to not fill him up on treats as you train him, it also helps to assert your dominance over him. |

| You can teach: Sit Down Stay Come When Called "Go Potty" This is the best time to start training, as they are like a sponge and will learn super quick! PM if you need some help! |
