Love Eating everything on the floor

Does anyone else's Yorkie eat everything on the floor...I know he's eating enough but he's constantly sniffing the carpet and floors for anything to chew on (hair, peice of carpet, etc) . Im just concerned because at one point the vet found alot of stuff (mostly bits of his nylabone) in his intestines. Of course vacuuming everyday helps but he still pulls up the carpet...anyone?

My youngest yorkie Max (9 mos) seems to do the same thing as yours. I'm always terrified he is going to find something he shouldn't. Even with constant cleaning and watching it's hard to keep up. We are in training now and teaching him to "leave it" has helped tremendously. At least if he gets something he will drop it (most of the time!) if told. I'm thinking it's a puppy thing since my others don't do it and will stop eventually. I don't believe it's because they are hungary, just curious (although mine will eat dirt, leaves etc!)

Oh yes, My little man does that, and it drives me crazy, im always scared that hes going to choke on something, or eat something that will hurt his belly. I vacuum all day long and pick everything up, but he will still find something to eat on!

I'd stop giving him the nylabones. Healthy Edibles are a safer option, as they are made to be digestible.

I also suggest teaching your yorkie the "leave it" command. You will be able to say this from any where and he will know to leave whatever has his interest alone.

Put your yorkie on leash. Have someone put down bits of food, hot dog, or whatever gets his interest, down on the floor in different areas. Walk him by the temptations, and when he goes to sniff them or look at them, say "Hey" or "Ah Ah" sharply. Follow by saying "leave it" when he looks away from the distraction and praise praise praise!

Practice this in any and all rooms, and even in the yard! You never know when this will come in handy!

Oh lordy. Yes...my girl does that ALL THE TIME! It too concerns me and drives me batty. She runs off with bits of paper...wrappers that the kids drop....morsels of food...you name it!

Duke does the same thing too inaddition to chewing.
What I'm concerned about is when I walk him outside, he sniffs and licks everything. Will he grow out of that stage where he'll just walk and sniffs instead of licking things off the ground?

Pookie is the same way as all of his distant cousins! My plastic hair clamps, loves to chew them up; rolls toilet paper off the roll, loves to eat it; baby wooden building blocks, will chew them into a round nub. Steals the grandchildren's stuffed animals, and runs with them. The bad thing is that you can't catch him. If it hits the floor, he's off with it. Hopefully they will all outgrow this stage. I'm waiting...patiently.

My Sebastian was just like this. I was so worried...especially after he found a penny on the ground, ate it, and became very very ill. Thankfully he was ok, but I have now been working on getting him to drop things. I spend all day picking things up, but with 3 little kids there's always something dropped that I don't see right away. My first step (because it worked so quick!) was to teach him a name for his treats. I use "sugar". Give them the treats and say the name over and over and over again. Pretty soon, you can call "sugar" from anywhere in the house and they will come running (and drop whatever they currently have). Within a day I was able to get my Yorkie to drop whatever he had and come running to me just by using this method. Now, I want to teach him the Leave it command. Thanks to the pp for telling in such great detail how to teach that command

Hello- everyone- ! My spike acts like he is a hound dog- he always has his nose to the floor for every little crumb-. He is very fond of crayons and pencils. lol. I try to remind my 6 year old son- to keep his stuff picked up otherwise- Spike finds it! He is constantly sniffing for something whether it be food or a Lego to chew on!

Default Our puppy too!

Mariah does the same thing! Yesterday she grabbed an uncooked spaghetti noodle that dropped to the floor while I was making supper. She ran off with it and ate some of it before I could get it away from her.

Unfortunately my daughter plays "tag" with her...so if you chase Mariah - she will RUN! It's truly impossible to catch her. I've been teaching "come" with her treats. But if she has something she knows she shouldn't - she won't always come - even for a treat.

I LOVE the "Leave It" command and will start practicing that tonight!

THANKS for the details of how to do it and for the great ideas!
