I Love Thor Donating Member | IF you could start over What would you do? I was reading a different thread which inspired me to ask this question. In terms of setting rules for yourself, and way to discipline/reward your puppy, knowing what you know now, what would you do. Or maybe you did everything right the first time, share your strategy too! I think this could turn into a really helpful guideline for new puppy owners. I'll start: I wouldn't encourage a new pups 'cute' barks. I would focus on socialization much more and not show my fears of other dogs to my puppy. I would work on recall and trust as a young pup (he still won't come if he sneaks out of the front door) I wouldn't make a big deal about leaving him (I don't know if this contributed to his separation anxiety) My list could go on... Let's build a helpful list, people can maybe learn from others mistakes and learn from good advice! |

| These are mistakes that I made with my Chi&I am making sure that I won't make them with my Yorkie: 1. Discourage barking&aggression. I wish I had taught her the "Enough" command. 2. Not getting her spayed. Perhaps her aggression would be much less if I had gotten her spayed before her first time in heat. 3. Not sticking with crate/potty training. Oh how I wish I had done this! So stupid of me to think that she'd figure it out on her own!!! 4. Not giving her table scraps. Now she begs for them like crazy&gets really upset if I don't share my food. -Amy

| i would have clicker trained from the start! I did with Dixie but not Dougal, it makes for a much better relationship with training and between you and your dog.

| I'd put them in the bath tub with a little water and gradually increase the amount of water, and also put them in a kiddie pool as soon as I got them at 3 months. Mine won't go in the kiddie pool yet!! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I would train outdoors I think with pee pads tey never learn to hold it for any length of time and they are more prone to accidents in the house. Not tolerate barking Not give them so many treats Not give in to them getting me up every day at 4 am

| I would have to say not encourage people food. And I wished I would have taught him more discipliine commands such as wait. He does sometimes but still tries to run out the door. I wish I would have not offered so many different foods at one time. Now he is so picky and particular. I am sure there is a ton of other things but these are the major ones.

| It's never too late -- and wait is one you have to keep reinforcing anyway. I've had to just do some more work with dixie on wait. She gets so excited at the start line of agility that she keeps breaking. she's excellent at home, pretty good at the park and getting better at agility. And I can leave the front door open to get groceries out of the car a couple of trips. It just takes time and don't forget to praise them when they do it right! (that's what I always forget when i'm trying to get dougal not to bark when tied to something)

I have no idea how to curb this behavior&I can't let him sit there&whine for a long time because I live in a duplex&the neighbors will hear him&come over to me to complain ... ARGH! Any advice? -Amy

| Kennel train and bell train from the beginning. I have a bell hanging from the front door that no one has any idea what it is for, but the cats have a grand time batting it around!
