Biting Barclay My 3 1/2 month old Yorkie is chewing everything in sight. He isn't satisfied unless he has something or someone in his mouth. I have been using the "ah ah ah" when I catch him chewing on the carpet which he can pick up at one end and run with and this is a 10 x 12 carpet. When I say a loud "ah ah ah" he immediately let's go and stops and stares at me. I stand in the peacock position with my arms crossed and stare him down. When he turns away I give him a toy to play with. So far this has worked for me. My problem is not so much biting and chewing the furniture, it's chewing everything in sight when we go outside. From the minute he steps out he picks up rocks, paper, plastic, he chases a leaf that blows and can catch it in midair. He is constantly on the sniff. Head down as he walks sniffing for the next object to pick up. We can be in the yard and he will grab a flower right off the stem in a spit second. I have tried bringing out a toy to keep in his mouth so he will walk with his head up. Our walks are mostly drags because he is picking and chewing something up every minute, yikes!!!! I have tried walking and keeping him on the sidewalk, but he picks up stones and anything that is available. If we go in the park he finds anything that someone dropped it's amazing his sense of the hunt, however, I am constantly pulling dangerous objects out of his mouth. I hope that he will grow out of this, but if anyone has gone through this then please let me know how you were able to break the "chew anything in sight" habit and make our outings a good exercise for both of us. |
