| ![]() So i've had my lil' Cookie for about 4 months now... i'm trying to teach her some tricks at home. So far, I have KINDA taught her how to sit and lay down. What are some neat tricks you have taught your lil' pup and how? I would like to learn how to teach her to beg or shake a paw but don't know how to go about doing so.... Thanks! |

| ![]() Hot Rod knows the sit and down really well. I make him sit whenever I put on and take his leash off and for treats. Hot Rod knows how to crawl, just make sure Cookie is down and then just keep the treat in front of her and pull back slowly and say crawl. Hot Rod will exaggerate his paw movements sometimes and it looks like he is swimming. He knows his right and left paw but sometimes I may need to repeat which paw-I ask for both each time differently just to keep it fresh. I started to ask for the specific paw and then when I had it in my hand, I kept repeating which paw. Actually I'd taught one of my cats that also. Hubby taught him to speak. I think hubby barked at Hot Rod to get him to bark back and then told him that was speak...I'm not real sure how he did it. I do know that he uses a hand signal for speak and Hot Rod really does know what it means! We're in puppy school now and we are learning stay...he's doing pretty good. We've gotten so we can get up and walk away for about 30 seconds. I think I had him rolling over somewhat, but I haven't done anything with that in about a month so it will be starting from scratch with that. He's gotten a lot better at come (from puppy school) too--still needs some work. I really want to make sure that he knows that one! For me, I would teach him one thing and repeat it for about a week and then move on to the next thing for about a week, throwing in what he'd learn already a few times too. and so on and so on. Good Luck with Cookie!

| ![]() I started teaching Deucy words at a very young age. He listens so WELL to EVERYTHING I say...even when I'm on the phone. I can talk to him almost like a person and he knows most all of the words. I started out teaching him small words like "cow"..then I made the sound of a cow and showed him the cows in the pasture so he could associate sound with object. He knows my outside guard dogs' names though he rarely has contact with them unless I'm holding him. He knows the words, "no", "ok", "train", "puppy dog"...(for when we go to vet or town to look for them) "kitty","frog", "flower" "mow", eggs, treat, hungry, potty, poo, my people friends' names and many others. I have to be REAL careful NOT to mention a friend is coming by or he will go to every window watching and barking ..waiting for them to arrive. It's SO CUTE. He is SO smart. I just let him see the object, say the word several times and that is it. I also make the noise of a new word/object if we are in the car as he watches everything we pass. Association...it's all about association with objects for my baby. Good luck! Quote:

| ![]() Zoe does dance which is easy to teach, you just hold the treat up and she figures it out and as she does it, I say the word dance. She also does bang bang. I point my finger at her and she lays down and rolls on her side like she's been shot ![]() ![]() |

| ![]() Well I don't know about beg, I've been wanting to teach Meeko that myself. I just can't figure out how to do. I tried holding treats just above him but he isn't going up. I can help you with shake tho, Meeko is a pro at it. Just show your baby a treat and then close your hand over it. It may take a lil bit, but your dog will eventually start to paw at your hand to try to get the treat. As soon as she starts pawing, mark her command. Wait untill shes pawing your hand fast, every single time and then start adding your word. It only took Meeko about 20 minutes until I added the word. You didn't ask about this trick, but I thought i'd add it anyway. Here's a thread I started a few weeks ago and someone asked how to teach Bang Bang (play dead) and I explained it. I hope the link words. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=123556 Good luck training!!! |

| ![]() How old was your Yorkie when you started training? I want to start as early as possible but I don't want to be cruel by expecting too much of the puppy. I haven't gotten him yet but he'll only be 8 weeks old when I get him and I don't know if that's too early to expect him to learn to sit and stay and all of that. Anybody know? |

Thor's Human Donating Member | ![]() Hey, saschi. You can start training your puppy right away. Just keep the training sessions extremely short, maybe 3 minutes at a time. Keep them fun for your pup, and end on a good note. Your puppy will learn to love learning!

| ![]() Jackson's been very smart and good with tricks! Here's a thread I just made yesterday with a video http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...cks-video.html He's pretty good at doing bang bang, roll over (half roll over), sit, down, shake, high-five, stay, come.

| ![]() My daughter Nicole (in the avatar) taught Reesie most of the basic stuff and she's pretty good except at right and left. The thing she taught her that amazed me was how to whisper. She taught her speak, and then one day she said to me 'watch this'. She looked at Reesie and said 'Whisper'. And Reesie did a little huff-huff bark, real quiet. Don't know how she did it. |
