I Need Advise!!

Cash is constantly using the potty in his crate !!! & no matter how many times i take him out he still does !!! can anyone offer any advice ??

How big is the crate? An ideal crate allows ONLY for room to stand, turn around, and lay down. I know with our Yorkies it's terribly hard to find crates that are small enough. I luckily never had a problem with Franklin pottying in his crate, so we never had to make it small. BUT I know that other YTers have put boxes or folded up towels in the back to make it as small as possible.

Also, are you taking away food and water a couple of hours before bed time? Make sure he potties right before you put him to bed. That will help.

As PrincessDiana asked... How big is his crate/maybe there is too much room?
Also, if your free feeding him...you have to expect that he'll need to use it. I feed my pup on a schedule (breakfast/dinner and snack in between) and that helps me to know when she has to use it. I pad trained my baby so that she'd always have place to go in the house if needed... Dont know your schedule, but that might be an option as well... Hope this helps

The rolled up towel in the back of the crate worked for us. Lexie was hiding her poo among the folds of the towel under her so we had to make it smaller and remove the towel under her so she couldn't hide it anymore.

yes he is in a small crate i fill it full of toys. he is on a schudel for food. no eating after 2pm. besides his chew bones & no water after 8pm. sometimes i even keep him up late when i stay up late till like 12am ! and at 8 or so in the morning he has pee'd. i dunno.

Wait.. you don't feed him after 2PM? If you're not waking up until 8AM, that's 18 hours without food. It depends on how old your baby is, but most Yorkies need to eat at least every 4-5 hours. His blood sugar could drop and he could easily go into hypoglycemic shock!! I would suggest feeding another meal. I think the water is okay, but I really would only limit it about two hours before bed. That should give him plenty of time to let it all out.

I hope that was a typo or something because 18 hours is FAR TOO LONG for a dog of any size to not be eating.

Also, if you're filling it full of toys... I think the crate might be too big. If he has room for toys AND to lay down, he also has room to potty. It literally only needs to be large enough for him to sleep in. Dogs like the den feeling. You should restrict the toys for daytime play.

he doesnt eat anything after 2pm, i get him up in the morning around 8 am & he eats, then i feed him again at 12pm and a snack at 1:30pm.

& he is very plump lol...& has alot of energy..so i dont think im depriving him. but, i will change feeding times and stuff i just want to go with something that i will know when he needs to potty & stuff.

I would go by whatever the manufacturer says they should have usually. The back will say how much food a puppy of _____ weeks should have. Then take that and distribute it to how many meals you want to feed.

I would make sure the last meal is 2-3 hours before bedtime. I've always been told they need to go 15-20 minutes after they eat but in my experience, it's been much much longer.

I would put him on a feeding schedule of 8am, 12pm and 6pm. No food after 6pm. I would have him no water after 7 or 8pm.

His crate may be small, but it's not small enough. You need to block as much of the crate in the back so that all that's left up front is enough room for him to turn and lay down. (For Millie, we had the smallest crate we could find and 2/3rds of the crate was blocked until she started to grow and we would only remove a few inches at a time. She did not have access to a full crate until she was about 1 year old.)

Secondly, I would take her out at 10pm and go to bed and put her in the crate. (unless you really want to stay up until 12am) Then I would set my alarm and get up about 3 or 4am and take her out for a quick pee and back in the crate. I would do this especially if you are not going to wake up before 8am. Most Yorkies that I know, at that young age, have to get up about 5am because they can't hold it any longer no matter what time they go to bed at night. It's only when they get older that sleeping in until 8am is feasible. If she can reliably count on one pee break in the middle of the night, she will learn to hold it until she gets her break, but you must be reliable and consistent about the break.
