| puppy wants to be Alpha dog At the age of 12 weeks I took my female puppy, Riley, to the vet. When he tried to open her mouth, she shut it tight, shook her head, and growled at him. He then told me that she was a very dominating little girl. He told me to begin to show her that I am alpha dog not her. He gave me some ideas about how to do this, but I would like some other ways. Help! |

| The only thing worse than one dog wanting to be the Alpha dog...is two dogs both wanting to be the alpha dog. I have a five year old and a l year old. They both want to be Alphas. The yound one will not permit you to turn her upside down. My vet suggested holding her in my arms and gently turn her over just a little. Each time continue to turn her until I can turn her on her back. She fights it and refuses to turn over.

| I think it's only because she didn't like the Vet. He may have had scary smells on him or whatever. I wouldn't read much into that unless she starts growling (in ernest) at you. She's a baby, and still learning. |

| Many years ago I had a vet that told me the same thing about my puppy. She then proceeded to show me how to correct the behavior by putting her hand over the pup's nose and squeezing her fingers into the sides of her mouth which made the poor thing scream in fear. By then 'I' was ready to bite the stupid woman but I was young and naive so I paid the bill and left. When I got home I called my mother sobbing and she said that vet sounded like a quack and to find another one. I filed a complaint with the vet's office and moved my records to another vet whom my pup loved instantly! So, unless you think your vet is correct and your baby is showing signs of aggression to you, I'd switch vets. One thing that's worked well with my current 3 babies is I have always played 'doctor' with them - you know how you do with human babies - let me see your teeth, let me see your ears, etc. That way when they had someone else examining them it was no big thing
