| Dogs Playing Together I have a question about dogs of different ages playing together. We've had an older female Yorkie for many years. She is now 10-1/2 YEARS old and always been the only dog in our home. Three weeks ago we got a new female Yorkie. She is now 11-1/2 WEEKS old. She is terrorizing the older one... running after her, biting her legs, climbing up on her and pawing at her face. I'm afraid that she'll scratch the eyes of the older one. The older one growls and snaps at her. Sometimes it's just a light playful mood and other times the puppy really gets wild. Other than this, they play together with toys always one trying to get a toy from the other. It took the older one 12 days to come around to the puppy then she started to play with her. I really don't like the little one biting. I know they have soft bites but sometimes she really sounds ferocious! Any tips on what to do? We've just been telling them "No" and they stop. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome! I have a 8/12 year old Pom who weighs 12 1/2 lbs and was an only dog until we got cali the yorkie pup at the end of August. She weighed 1 lb then and now is 3 1/2 lbs but from day one does exactly what you describe yours are doing. Maya the pom has always been a bit of a snappish dog but so far she has never hurt her because I watch closely, She does growl and snap at teh puppy but doesn't bite her. I don't think she wil ever love the puppy but hopefully tolerate her. Good luck

| I just hope and pray the puppy is just playing. I don't think she knows when to stop. The older one will muzzle the puppy's nose to let her know she doesn't like it but the puppy still doesn't stop! The older one has "put down" the puppy a few times but the puppy just thinks she's playing. I don't know whether to let them keep playing so roughly or to try to teach them to not play like that. More than anything else, I'm so afraid one of them will get their eye injured. We've never had TWO dogs at the same time so this is something new to us. In the past, the older one would not play. I think she is being the "Alpha".

| Your little one will learn the pecking order soon enough... If the older dog is giving stern warnings and not outright attacking, it sounds like you just have a pup who is trying to establish its limits and an older dog who is trying to enforce them.

| I wouldn't say the older one is "attacking". All this is done while they're playing. The little one loves to play. I think it's the older one being the Alpha and trying to set the limits for the new puppy. Guess we'll try just letting them play and hope and pray that neither gets hurt! Merry Christmas!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That's pretty much what I do too. I also have never had 2 dogs at the same time and I really do not want to live with them seperated. Fortunately Maya is prett slow on her feet and the puppy is quick. We do have many hours of the day where they will lay side by side ignoring each other as the puppy has gotten a little older and not AS wild.Good luck.

| My 9 week old is doing the same thing to my 2 yr old, Scooby. I think its pretty natural and he has been a pretty good sport with her, however, when he is tired of her he will give her a warning and somehow...I guess she understands doggie language, she knows how far to push... Lola will stop for about 30 seconds and resume. I have watched closely, but haven't intercepted for them, they seem to be establishing their own boundaries. |

| We appreciate all the comments from everyone. It looks like it might be a natural thing. So we'll let them play and hope the little one will know when to stop. She seems to be having a hard time with that for now but the older one sets her straight most of the time. It's when I hear all the growling and snapping that I get scared for them so we keep a close eye on them. Happy holidays to everyone.

| Be careful to watch the older one for injuries. We had an older large dog and got a large dog puppy. The older dog patiently endured all the pup's nonsense to the point that the puppy actually tore the older guy's ear and we had to have it stitched up. The puppy didn't mean to hurt and the older guy didn't want to hurt the puppy to defend himself. So it's not just the pup's that need protection! |

| That's exactly the kind of thing that worries me if we let them play. We'll just have to watch them closely. Both ours are Yorkies - older one is a Silky at 8 lbs & the other is the puppy at 2.8 lbs. & only 11-1/2 weeks old. We know when it gets noisy to put a stop to it. I say "FINISH" and they know it's time to stop and I give them a small treat - this helps to cool them cool. After that, it takes a while for them to start up again. We just made a mistake & went in to PetsMart again - came out after spending $55!*! But we do love our babies, don't we? We also made a trip to the dollar store & bought 3 little things for the dogs there. Happy Holidays!

| dogs playing Hi, I just got a yorkie about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I have a Golden Retriever that plays with the puppy & I have a Pekingese mix who does not like him. Pookie is 10 weeks old & sounds just like your pup - he's a wild man for a couple hours & then he goes to sleep. The Peke growls, barks & snaps at Pookie People tell me it takes time & hopefully they will be OK. We supervise so nobody gets hurt. The Golden's tail thumping & wagging is a big attractant for Pookie. We have to "remove" him & tell him "no" & give him toys instead. Hopefully they will all be buds soon. Happy Holidays, Sherry B |

| It took our older Yorkie 12 days to get used to the puppy. I said earlier in a message that I feared one of them getting clawed or bit in the eye. Wellll, this afternoon they were playing and when they were done I just happened to check out the puppy. Lo' and behold, she now has a little BLOOD in the white on one eye. Do I need to do anything about this? They do get rough, snarling, growling, biting each others face, legs, etc. - but mostly at faces! That is what scares me. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
