Star Is it ok to buy puppies advertised in paper?

Hello everyoneI have a query about the best place to find a yorkie pup. I have read alot on yt about 'puppy mills' and 'backyard breeders' and these are something i had never heard of before. I know that in England they dont sell cats or dogs in pet shops, but would a 'kennel' that advertises lots of different breeds for sale be a puppy mill? And are ads in the papers for puppies 'backyard breeders'? I'm not looking for show quality or to breed, just for a new family member. Hope what i've asked makes sense I have been researching yorkies for a long while now and am ready for one but am unsure on the next step to take. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I think a newspaper is an acceptable place to advertise for dogs for sale, but you still have to give the breeder the same scrutiny that you would if you bought them anywhere else. Others can no doubt give you better advice, but you should inquire about their breeding history and whether this line of Yorkies has any genetic defects, ask to see both "parents" if possible, visit them in their home and see for yourself how the dogs are raised, inquire about about a health guarantee.

If you're looking for a lower-priced dog, you may not get all you ask for, but you still want to have as much background information as possible to make sure you're not buying into a line with proven genetic defects.

Good luck.

Thanku for your advice. yes i will certainly inquire about genetic defects. Most of the ads i have seen say that the parents can be seen so those are the ones i will respond to. I am looking for the 'standard' so am steering clear of anything advertised as 'teacup' or 'minature'. prices seem to vary from £350 to £575 (KC registered) so I'll be wary of anyone selling puppies for alot lower than that. xxx

Oh, good, glad I could help. Sounds like you're headed on the right track.

You might check back here for more advice. I'm not a breeder and have never purchased a new pup from a breeder. I was just passing on some of the things I picked up here, on YT.

Thanks. Yeah I will have a read through some of the threads on the breeders forum to pick up some tips on what to look forI've picked up loads of knowledge from yt too! When i first 'discovered' yorkshire terriers I used to see pics of those advertised as 'teacup' and think they were so cute and that i wanted one. But now i've learnt that they are not sold by reputable breeders, are not an actual breed and can have lots of health problems. I've learnt so much here and i'm glad i've done so much homework before getting a yorkie of my own. xxx

Terrific. It pays to do the research. A lot of people go into it not knowing what to look for, and they too often get burned. Glad you learned to be leery of the "teacup" designation.

have you considered Yorkshire Terrier rescue society as they sometimes have some lovely yorkies that just need a bit of tender love and care or alternatively most good yorkie breeders have some of the litter not suitable for showing and are willing to let them go to a pet home. I personally would be very wary of newpaper adds and especially if they quote a size etc. There is no such thing as a larger yorkie, teacup yorkie or any other size reference. breeders who say they breed a special size are not reliable - the standard is 5-7 lbs no mention of size and they do come in different sizes but that is not due to specific breeding. There are also many yorkshire terrier clubs that keep a list of puppies available and they are from quality breeders who have gone into the pedigrees and are aware of the lines they are breeding. They will sometimes be happy for any extra yorkies that are not suitable for showing to go to pet homes and are very caring with the history of their litters. Hope you are successful they are a wonderful breed and although small are really BIG DOGS in a small BODY.

I would ring your local yorkshire terrier club as they will be able to put you in touch with recomended breeders.I personally would not buy one from a newspaper ad as I have always been told that good breeders do not need to advertise their pups. You may have to be prepared to go on a waiting list but it will be well worth it and save a lot of heart ache later on.

Hope this helps

There are two really good, fairly foolproof ways of finding a reputable breeder in this country to buy your puppy from.

One way is to go onto the Kennel Club's website, click onto their puppy finder page & type in the breed you want. This will bring up a list of breeders with puppies available & their contact details. There are usually quite a few listed for Yorkies as they are popular.

The other way is to contact secretaries of the breed clubs, that you've been given contact numbers from in a previous post. That way you get onto the breeders grape vine & get passed along via phone calls till you find someone who has a litter, either now or due soon.

This is the way I've always had people contact me. I don't breed my Yorkies but I show & breed two other breeds, one is on the At Risk list, & I've never resorted to advertising in a paper as I always have a waiting list before a litter is even born.

One thing I would add to Meggies post is that you should still be careful even if a litter is on the kennel club site as just because they are kennel club registered
it doesn't mean that they ok.Still ask loads of questions such as how long has the breeder been breeding for? and how many litters has the female had?
I have purchased both my yorkies through the breed clubs and then been passed onto a breeder who then knows someone who has a litter as Meggie said.

Good luck in your search and let us know how it goes

I think a newspaper is fine aslong as you are able to check out the breeders home
