Very many of the dogs in shelters are desirable. Over 1/3 of dogs in shelters are purebred. I got a "designer dog" - yorkie/chi mix from my shelter, no screening process I just paid my $60 and she was mine. There are tons of pups in the shelters and rescues around here. My best friend just got a shih/maltese mix puppy from the local rescue for $175. There are plenty of purebred adults in shelters as well, most with "no baggage". Most dogs aren't in shelters b/c they are bad dogs with baggage, most are there because of stupid owners. I personally have fostered a 4lb middle aged poodle, a teeny 10 wk old poodle puppy, a JRT/poodle mix puppy, and a purebred chi puppy. All turned into the shelter because their owners weren't very smart and didn't think things through before getting a dog.

Can't say I disagree with you there. I've had my experience with a dog with baggage and know the heartache that can cause. But don't you know, at one point in time, those shelter dogs were born to fill what was once 'supply and demand' in their time--sadly, the fad that brought them into this world passed and they got dumped. That is another thing scary about people 'mixing at the rate they do.' As soon as that so-called 'designer dog' starts showing the traits of a dog that was ill bred all because the "breeder" (and I used that term loosely) wanted to have money and irresponsibly bred what people wanted at the time, he's gonna get dropped off at the pound with all of the other mutts.

| well here there are hardly ever any small cute breeds in shelters here. trust me i volunteer at one as well as my mom, for many years and occasionally we will get a chiuahuah or a poodle they dont even make it to the available listing, we had a yorki-poo one time and a volunteer kept that one. its always lab mixes, pit mixes (lots of pits mixes) shepherds, beagle..and for me thats not something i would be interested in. sure sometimes there are puppies available but not very often here. its like i said i see some on petfinders but they are never local.. |

| I think the type dogs you find in shelters is regional. (And I know I've had this conversation here before.) Here, the smaller dogs overcrowd and the lab mixes are the first to find homes. At PetSmart adoption days, they say they always bring labs, beagles and hounds because they know they will be able to place them. And you rarely see a purebred of anykind in a shelter unless it is really sick or something like that. |

| supply and demand is what it is and some people dont like it but thats part of the world i agree that its unfair that a shelter dog with baggage didnt start out that way and it isnt their fault. and that there are a lot of ignorant people who abuse, and drop off dogs... |

But still, the 'designer dog' fad and those who actively suppport it do nothing but add to the problem.

| I have a page dedicated to my thoughts on this subject. There are 2 interesting links on the bottom that will help you with your educated decision. I checked them and the links are still up as of today. http://www.tx2stepnyorkies.com/designerdogs.html |

I've been reading this thread and the bottom line is: Being humans we all tend to find justification for what we do....whether it be posting our question on an open forum to obtain validation from others or to obtain input. What ever our reasons, in the end we all do what we want, whether correct or not we have to live with ourselves and take the responsibilty of our decisions. The best we can do is be honest with ourselves and why we are doing what we do. Breeding to satisfy the market on these dogs, only says one thing to me, it's about the money.

| IMO i would not do it. I don't know anything about breeding but i can tell you that if i want a yorkie baby i will just get a yorkie baby. If i want both yorkie and s**tzu. I will get one of each but i don't think i want the mix of both. |

I see threads such as this one and I cringe....not because I want to save the world....because of indiscriminate breeding Animal legislation is being attempted to be put into place.....If we aren't careful in breeding.....the option of being a pet owner, breeder, exhibitor will be taken out of our hands......Do we want big brother in this aspect of our lives too.........heck! I can't even go to a fast food resturant and order great greasy fries anymore....that's been taken out of my choices too........If I would have wanted health food, I'd have gone to a health food store.

| It is very sad to think that everyone accross the board will have to deal with this all because a few people saw $$$ when they decided to crank out 'designer breeds'. |
