Donating YT 14K Club Member | Breeding and Mentors I know that people here say that if you want to start breeding, you should find a mentor in your area. I tried doing that. Once breeders found out that I wanted to get into the business, they stopped returning my phone calls and the ones that did return calls avoided all talks of breeding and didn't want to share any information. It seems to be a very cut-throat business. I've learned much information here on YT. There are years of breeding experience here. If you also feel that you can't find a mentor in your area to help you get started, find the breeders here on YT. I'm sure that they won't keep information from you. Also, I've been in the process of getting another male. Since I've learned the hard way how the business works here, I cannot even tell her why I want a certain type male with certain face and body structure. It's really sad. I have a couple of friends that are new in the business, too. We usually stick together but one friend has gotten to know a couple of breeders on a personal level so she gives the information back to us.

| ACK! Same here! All the breeders I've known (and I've known more than a few - including more than just Yorkie breeders) once they know you want to breed or even interested in the idea of breeding you are then on the ignore list! I don't see how they want only the best for the breeds when they care so little about helping others! When I know important information I am more than happy to pass it on! I have felt very welcome at Yorkietalk and feel that many really care about the dogs here! I worked at a kennel once where we had to stuff food down a dogs throat just so he would be the "perfect" weight. His owners had never even laid eyes on him before and he was only there to learn to be in shows and win. I am soooo happy to find a place where they really feel for the dogs..champ or no champ!

| Mentors It is very hard I know. I did not have a mentor and learned so much the hard way, made mistakes I didn't have to make if I had good advise. You have mentors here...Rini Whispersmom and I will answer everything we can and find out the answer to anything we can not.. |

| it took me awhile for the seasoned and show breeders to warm up, now they all love to chat and compare notes. Since I was first ignored too I started by emailing and calling everyone in the YTCA and many were so nice and encouraging they called and chatted for hours. Where theres a will theres a way. I too will help in any way I can as well if you would ever like to chat with a couple well respected show breeders here (mind you they will keep you on the phone for hours) I would be happy to give you there numbers. Many breeders have their own perspective and agenda, dont be discouraged just as many are here to help!

Great to know that one of the most knowledgeable breeders here (no offense to anyone else) began w/out a mentor the way a lot of us our. I find it impossible to find a mentor and almost everybody I know is very negative on the idea of breeding. Having a mentor would be wonderful, but I don't think that is an option for a lot of us. I truly apreciate all of the wonderful breeders on here who contribute their time and knowledge to the rest of us and our yorkies. Someday I will breed and along the way I am learing so much from everybody here. Thank you. | |

| I was very lucky to have a mentor... she boards dogs, and we have boarded our dogs with her many times, we also have done work for her. I am willing to bet that she would be willing to help anyone if they needed it... she is quite known in the show ring, but she told me how difficult it was to get started. She hit a lot of the road blocks you have hit at first, and ended up selling her yorkie stock, and purchased yorkies from the "show breeders" and finally then she was "let it"... but it took many years of trial and error. She has many champions now (no longer in yorkies though, she has been out of the yorkies for many years) and she has a waiting list for her pups... and she doesn't have pups that often. Anyways, she said it was a difficult road, and she has made it... so I don't believe that you are not alone with the road blocks you have been running into. good luck with the purchase of your male pup |

| I cannot tell you the amount of runarounds that I have gotten in these past couple of years that I have been seeking information on breeding Yorkies here in South Florida. If it weren't for this site and especially Whiper'smom I still would be in Limbo Land. I personaly thank you all for all the straight answers and honesty. |

| this is why i love YT so much!! there are so many nice people on here.. I once asked about breeding on another forum.. and people jumped down my throat because i even thought about breeding!.. in reality, i really don't know about breeding but would like to learn.. i think Ginger would be a great Yorkie to breed.. but i was never able to get any information because no one would help me.. all they told me was that i was stupid, crazy, dumb.. you know all that fun stuff.. because i mentioned the word.. breeding I think maybe if people were to get advice on breeding.. and learn more about it.. that there would be less dogs going to shelters.. and more dogs finding forever homes.. and breeding the right way.. instead of being shunned for thinking about it.. |
