| How to judge mature weight of a puppy My yorkie, Jasmine, is a little larger than some of the other puppies I saw available. It's one of the reasons I chose her although I understand the AKC limits conformation entries at 7 pounds. Her mother was almost 8 lbs and her father only 4 lbs. Is there a formula or chart or something that I can use to estimate what her mature weight will be? Like if she weighs X amount now at nearly 12 months she'll weight X when she's full grown? Just wondering. My main focus/desire is to do agility trials but if I CAN do conformation with my local club I probably will. Angela <>< |

| Weight at 12 weeks animal-pa The rule is at 12 weeks you double the weight and that is what they will weight full grown. Hope this helps.

| But don't rely on the rule 100%. Kona was 2 pounds at 8 weeks, so she should have been 6 pounds... But she's not even 5 pounds.

| I know nothing is exact - I just wondered. I'll have to go weigh her!! :-) With kids the saying is "double the height at 2 years old and that's how tall they'll be" so we measured my son on his 2nd birthday and he was 3' tall exactly. :-) We'll have to see how that pans out, eh? Thanks for the tip. I guess we'll see! Of course - she just ate so how reliable can it be. Especially on my old bathroom scale. **laughing** Maybe I can sneak her into Walmart and have the cashier weigh her. That's how I always weighed my human babies. :-) Angela <>< |

| I use the general rule: at 8 weeks , multiply weight by 3 at 12 weeks, multiply weight by 2 But every puppy is different. Good Luck!

| Well then - at 10 weeks old and BARELY 2 lbs - is it safe to think she just might stay under the 7 lb mark!? :-D |

| You are right. Normally, bitches grow very little after the first heat, but as you say every puppy is different and sometimes they may be a little unpredictable. Rubi, my six year old lil one stopped growing at 7 months right after her first heat. She weighed around 5 Ibs then. Then, all of a sudden, almost at one year of age she grew up in a spurt putting on 1 1/2 Ibs. |

| Have you checked to see the size of the grandparents? I use the Chihuahua puppy chart and so far it is almost exact. The line my studs come from are fully grown at between 6-7 months. Their weight may fluxuate and they may even put on weight but they don't grow any bigger. I also have a big stud and he grew until he was 18 months old. He weighs 11 lbs but at a year he was only about 9 lbs. Just type in Chihuahua Puppy Weight Chart and choose one. When you see the chart, just find the line for how many weeks old your puppy is. Then go across the page in that row and find the weight of your puppy. Then scroll down in the column the puppy's weight is in and at the bottom it will tell you how much your puppy should weigh fully grown. Sylvia |
