| Oxytocin I need opinions on taking my Fancee in for an Oxytocin shot after she's whelped. What's your experience? Is it important enough to take her to an Emergency Clinic, if it's the weekend and my Vet's closed? I took Yahtzee in after her first litter, but didn't after the second. She ended up having trouble after the second litter (dehydration) and not passing a placenta. THANKS for your help. |

| Definitely if placentas aren't accounted for. With her history alone it let's you know it's better to be safe than sorry. I don't think I would chance it with this girl, I'd at least get an exam (not all vets will do a clean out shot). Good thing is, you have knowledge ahead of time and you have time to have funds in place. |

| Are you confident enough to give the oxytocin shot yourself? My vet gives me the oxytocin if I request it. I've only used it once... on my Bitsy... after speaking to my vet on the phone.

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I'm going to ask my vet today about that. For some strange reason I feel he's going to tell me know, but I'd rather have it on hand and call him and if thats all we need then we can do it at home. |

| I have oxy on hand, but have seen no need to use it yet. I've heard recommendations for clean out shot after whelpings. Delores, my mom's usually bleed for what seems like a long time afterwards (4-5 weeks) how long does yours bleed with oxytocin? |

| My Vet hasn't returned my call. That probably means that she won't help me with the Oxytocin. Yahtzee only had discharge for a week or so. Fancee's still up and around. |

no longer than usual. In fact, in all but one the mom hardly even had a discharge after the shot . the one was Frankie and she went on for weeks. i was worried because she just didn't bounce back well from that litter. | |

| most vets won't give you the oxy to have on hand. they would rather you come in and pay the office call |

| shot A shot is best with in 24 hrs..so only Saturday puppies would be a problem for you. I gave my own and they eere cleaned out and no discharge to speak of by 3 to 5 days... Some years back an English breeder showed me how check for and remove a retained placenta..stand the bitch on a table..place your hand on either side of the uterus and run it from the rib cage to the end of the vagina, as if you were removing sausage from a casing..it can take a few times, but they always come out for me..or to the opening and you can gently pull it out... |

I too give a POP shot within 24 hours after a whelping. That is if I don't use it during the whelping. I do the suasage thing, but then gently insert a Q-tip and twirl lightly, it will wrap around the Q-tip and you can gently pull it out. I guess the key is to find a breeder friendly Vet.

| Fancee has 3 pups, took her to the vet, she wouldn't give the o-shot, said she still has a live pup inside, that I should give her a few more hours or take her to the emergency clinic for a c-section. I've been forced to make several decision this evening. #1 that I will find a full service vet. |
