| Question: Nursing Puppies Hi, I'm new to the Yorkie Forum. My Yorkie had 3 beautiful puppies 5 weeks ago. She was a great mom and nursed her puppies constantly. However, I had noticed that in the last week, she began to stop nursing them and would nurse them maybe once or twice a day. Now, she has stopped alltogether and when I try to force her a little bit she does not want to. I'm concerned about the puppies, since I have been trying to wean them by feeding them once a day with a mixture of goats milk, baby rice cereal and a/d puppy food, but they really don't like it and don't eat much. Is this normal? I have started bottle feeding them but have to basically force them to take it. Any suggestions?????? I'm a little frustrated and worried since this is my first time having puppies. If you can shed some light on the situation, please write. thanks!! |

| Sounds like pups are ready to wean. Continue to offer them goats milk and puppy food (ground kibble) just make sure that it's not to dry. They may want something to chew on while they teeth so try a bit of dry kibble in small bites. Have it around through out the day and see what they think. I've found that mine prefer dry very quickly. Don't be surprised if mom vomits up some food for them, it's nature's way.

| My females only nurse their puppies a little over 4 weeks also and then they have had enough. I start my puppies on the dry puppy food soaked in Esbilac or water with a little canned food mixed in with eat and I also keep syringing them the Esbilac for a little bit depending on how well they are eating their puppy food. Also just because they are weaning themselves doesnt mean they are ready to leave their mommy. They need to stay for at least 10 weeks and 12 weeks is even better. Good luck.
