| Vaccine reactions, have you seen this??? I am posting this here because breeders are exposed to more Yorkies than most, ....Yogi, my little stud is due soon for his annual vaccines. The second series he had, I had to literally carry him around on a pillow for 2 days and give him baby aspirin because he would cry when I would touch him and he was in pain and had a slight fever....Vet said, "these little dogs sometimes just do this"....Ok, well, then his next series several months later, 2 hours after he had them, he came walking out of my room, about 10 feet and fell over and could not get up, his breathing was rapid and raspy. I gave him a benadryl , to at least get that on board, called the Vet, took him in 10 minutes later and he got a steroid injection and he was ok in about an hour...I know he is having a reaction to one of the strains in the vaccine..I know from nursing each time exposed to something your allergic to, the reaction gets worse...I don't want to go through this again...has anyone else had experience with this and what should I do....All of our others do fine with them. Thanks.

| I haven't had a problem with this but I don't think that I would expose him to another vaccine. If he will be your home all the time and only exposed to your dogs it would seem wise to take the risk. I'd confer with your vet but if it were me I'd stop while I'm ahead.

| If that was the same Vet. I would be finding another one. These guys need small dosages, not the whole thing. They should NEVER give them as much serum as what a large dog gets. They should also not have them every year, but only every three years. I found all this out today at my Vets. and he's a specialist. I do hope you find a Vet. that knows what he is doing. Poor little baby. |

| OMG!!! I am sooo sorry for you and the little guy!!! That makes me so sad and angry! I would definitely go to another vet, and just talk to him about it (before time for his not shots). Then, they can determine what is causing it. Mojo never had this, but he had a big brown growth like thing come up where the shots were given and he was loosing his hair around the spot...his THEN vet said it was just from the shot and nothing to worry about, BUT he kept loosing more and more hair and the spot would get bigger. We took him to our NOW vet and she removed it and biopsied it and sure enough it was from the vaccine. She removed it and it healed nicely, no scar and all his hair grew back. The funny thing is (well, a good thing) it has never happened before??!! Isn't that crazy??!!!

| Oh gosh, your poor baby! I wouldn't risk giving him that shot again. You can get a titer test to check for immunity instead of giving the shot.

| Thank-you for your responses and time...I am going to ask for titers and not get anything he's not needing now...I don't "stud" him out and he is only around our others. I don't know if he was given a "full" dose or one for his size. I try and respect our Vets knowledge without question UNTIL something happens like this and I will be questioning from now on...I thought maybe it just a particular strain in the vaccine that he had a problem with, because the other 3 never had any reaction what so ever...Live and learn the hard way...Thanks

| OMG this is exactly what happened to my little Skampi last week after his first puppy shot (the reaction your doggie had the last time....having to carry him around on a pillow & being in so much pain & not being able to touch him, he yelped in pain when I picked him up it lasted 28 hours) He is 12 weeks old, and is due his 2nd shot next week. I have spoken to the vaccine manufacturer (duramune made by Fort Lodge....) and I have changed vets to a vet who is willing to give the vaccine without LEPTO and it's a different brand of vaccine (this one is Novibac by Intervet) and the vet will administer anti histamine prior to vaccine but I have done so much reading & also see that if the pup is exposed to allergen again the reaction is much worse. I think I am taking every precaution by switching brands and dropping LEPTO but what if the allergen is in the distemper vacine or is something else? Also he had his first shot at 11 weeks and I have also read he will have a lot of immunity already (possibly lifelong) to distemper & parvo. I have been thinking about not having the 2nd puppy shot or ever vaccinating again and using homeopathic nosodes instead. If I do this will he always be at risk, will I have to keep him indoors & away from other doggies? He won't be allowed to go to puppy class or training or agility games....also I have put my name down to foster at the local rescue but I won't be allowed to do that either if my baby is not "up to date" with all shots but his health comes before all that & I am terrified he could die next time, I have read that this has happened to a yorkie before after a shot. I know how you feel but if your baby has had all his puppy shots then he is extremely likely to be immune to everything except Lepto, if I were you I'd never have a shot for him again...he doesn't need it. But I don't know what to do about my baby, he has only had ONE shot (for parvo, Lepto, Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Corona virus) at 11 weeks. Does anyone on here know what kind of immunity he will have after this? And does anyone have any advice about nosode use? Please advise thankyou |
