| Birth Question Here's my situation, we bred our male with a friends female. This is the second time that we have bred them, and the first litter was healthy and fine. Well Reilly went into labor this morning, and delivered a little boy. No one was up yet, and when they woke up and saw that Reilly had delivered a little boy, Reilly was in the process of chewing on the new baby. We have no idea why she would have done this, but she ended up chewing off one of the back legs and the tail. So the owner of Reilly, ran the puppy to the vet where the ended up having to put the puppy to sleep because of this. My question is, has anyone been through something like this, and can anyone tell me why a mother dog would do this. Could she have sensed something wrong with the baby? I am just sick about this. Also, I am worried about Reilly, how she will react to all of this. The vet gave her a pill that is supposed to induce her labor to see if there were any other puppies in there. Its so sad, I just want to know what would cause this. Please help! __________________ ~Buckeye's Mama~

| That is so tragic. I'm so sorry. I have no experience with this, but my guess would be that they baby would not have survived anyway. But don't they usually just push the puppy aside if there is something wrong with it? |

| so sorry to hear of your loss I could not even imagine how you and your friend are feeling about this. From experience w/ newborn puppies and doing some reading...some mothers will know that there was something wrong with the puupy or she could have mistaken for the umbilical cord. How terrible...did she have any other puppies yet ?

| No other puppies yet. We are praying that she does. It is so sad to think about, I never even thought that she could have mistaken his leg and tail for the umbilical cord, that is a very good possibility. I guess that the only good thing is that none of us had a chance to become really attached to the baby. Betty, my friends mother, the owner of Reilly is blaming herself, because she stayed home from work today sick and overslept a little, she said that if she would have just gotten up on time, then she could have seen Reilly trying to deliver. I just keep telling her that it is not her fault that maybe Reilly knew that somthing was wrong with the little guy and thats why she did it. Thank you for your comments, they really do help!

I hope for you guys she does deliver another. It will help with the grieving process for both humans and the mother. Good luck!

| whelping Why not have an xray to determine if there are more pups since the pill is not working...unfortunely a bitch can get over zealous in chewing the cord and remove past they should not..especially if it is dark...good to be there... |

| i have never experienced this but have heard of this happening many times. i hope she isn't too hard on herself. not to be harsh, but this is part of breeding. you hear people say all of the time, when you decide to breed, you have to be able to handle if you loose a puppy or the mommy or anything else awful than can happen. breeding is not for everyone. yes, this is a horrible incident. i hope she does have another baby. i wish her luck and give her lots of hugs from us

| Thank you all so much for your advice. So far no more puppies so I am guessing that she is done. I understand this is what you sign up for when you breed....I guess since her first litter went so well that no one really expected this litter to go so bad, but it happens and is always unexpected. I think since this is the first time anything like this has happened to us it is a little more difficult. As it would be for any breeder. Thank you for your prayers and again advice. I appreciate all of it.

| Sorry So sorry for the loss of the little guy. I've never experienced that with any of my yorkie moms. If nothing else... you have educated all of us on "what could happen" during the whelping of pups. All the best to you.

| I'm clueless here. I only had a dog have puppies once in my life and I'll never do that again. I am so sorry this happen to you. I think an x-ray would have been better than a pill. |
