Default Birth Question

Here's my situation, we bred our male with a friends female. This is the second time that we have bred them, and the first litter was healthy and fine. Well Reilly went into labor this morning, and delivered a little boy. No one was up yet, and when they woke up and saw that Reilly had delivered a little boy, Reilly was in the process of chewing on the new baby. We have no idea why she would have done this, but she ended up chewing off one of the back legs and the tail. So the owner of Reilly, ran the puppy to the vet where the ended up having to put the puppy to sleep because of this.

My question is, has anyone been through something like this, and can anyone tell me why a mother dog would do this. Could she have sensed something wrong with the baby? I am just sick about this. Also, I am worried about Reilly, how she will react to all of this. The vet gave her a pill that is supposed to induce her labor to see if there were any other puppies in there. Its so sad, I just want to know what would cause this. Please help!
