| Need Opinions please Hi everyone. I have 2 yorkies that i purchased from 2 different breedres 3 and 4 years ago. They had a litter and i sold the pups to friends. One of my friends has mentioned to me several times that a few people have commented in regards to her her pup (now 7mos old) not looking like a yorkie. His snout is longer and he is about 10 lbs now. I actually saw him in person and at first thought it was because she keeps his hair really short throughout incl. his face but i was reading on the internet and he matches the characteristics of a "silky" Im not sure what to think, both my dogs have papers my Fem CKC and my Male AKC and both of their papers say they are Yorkshire terriers so im starting to feel cheated. Could it be one of the breeders lied to me? Im not sure of what to tell my friend i dont want her to think I lied to her and tried seeling her something else as a"yorkie" can you guys please give me your input?

| Of course it is possible that one of the breeders lied to you. That is always a possibility. However, there is alot more that goes into 2 dogs "making a puppy" than what it reads on a piece of paper. More than likely, the genetics of the two parents did not compliment each other, resulting in offspring that didn't look like what you'd expected it to--not your textbook representation of the breed. It doesn't mean that the dog won't be a great, loveable pet. |

| yeah i personally dont care but I just feel bad that my friend may think i lied to her and i sold her a silky rather than a Yorkie. I guess im just confused now and I would love to be able to give her a reasonable explanation. How can someone know if 2 dogs will compliment each other? Im just full of questions at this point.... Thanks for your input though

| I don't think the CKC requires the parents to be registered CKC in order to register a dog, meaning your CKC female could have been accepted into the registry because she looked like a yorkie, or her parents could have been and then she would have automatically been accepted. It's hard to say. Do you have a history of her lines on her CKC papers? And we all know that the AKC will register dogs even if they aren't standard, so even if both the parents of your pups are standard yorkies, you really don't know much about their lineage. I'm sure your friend's puppy is still a wonderful pet. I would just explain to her that you really don't know exactly how puppies will turn out. |

| so if my dogs look like yorkies and hers has more charachteristics of a silky, is her pup then still considered a Yorkie or would he be a Silky? I understand they are the same family but Silky is still not a "Yorkie" and thats what worries her. Do I make sense?

| There is still the potential there that it is 100% Yorkie. Some of them do get larger than others. How did the rest of that litter turn out? |

| My Chachi is bigger ten lbs and has a bigger snout and my groomer has asked if he was a silky ecause he does look different than my other 6 lb dog with small features but he is a yorkie. I am sure yours are yorkies too. I think the bigger yorkies do take on a silky appearance because their features are larger

| well all of them range between 6-10lbs none of them is very tiny but hers i think is the only one that came out with a longer snout and bigger all together. I think people's comments bother her and I can see why. Well hopefully I can give her a little more info. Thanks, i really appreciate all of your input

| It really upsets me when people are displeased with their dog (any breed) only after they get comments or questioned by others. As if the dog is only good enough for them if society and their friends deem it as such. |

| I'm not a breeder and am on my first Yorkie who looks exactly like all other Yorkie pups I've ever seen pictures of. But a few weeks ago, a woman in the pet store I go to commented that she'd never seen a Yorkie like her. What??? Like I said, she looks identical to all the Yorkie puppy pictures I've ever seen and she's only 4.5 lbs at 6 mos. So I don't know what that woman was talking about, but I just think that some people are ignorant about what a standard size Yorkie is supposed to look like. Standards are larger than the tinies and I think uneducated people think that they should all look like tinies. |

| I know what you mean. Im not upset because i try to get myself in her place. I mean if someone sold me a Yorkie and I paid for a Yorkie I too would be concerned if people are telling me i got something different. I know she loves the liitle guy, i've witnessed her love for him I think its just more a matter of principal and thats why I too feel a little concerned

| I don't think (most) people get concerned about the appearance of their Yorkies because they love it any less or think it's a bad dog. To me, being concerned about possibly having been ripped off and loving the dog are two totally separate issues. I can't blame the OP's friend for being concerned about others' comments if she paid for the puppy thinking that she's paying for a purebred Yorkshire Terrier (not to say that she didn't get a purebred Yorkie, we all know that there are purebred Yorkies that don't fit the standard). I'm sure the lady loves her puppy very much regardless of her feelings as a consumer. As far as the original question, I don't think there's anyway to tell for sure if the parents are purebred Yorkies unless you do DNA testing. I know AKC sells a DNA kit, but I'm not sure about CKC. If your Yorkies fit the standard for the breed, then I just think the puppy is a throwback, like someone already mentioned. Maybe you can direct your friend to a website about Yorkie genetics and breeding to familiarize her with common breeding issues. |
