Ears question I've read here that floppy ears is a genetic fault. That's strange. I didn't realize that. My girl's ears were almost standing when we bought my second pup. Then, they would play by biting each other's ears and dragging each other around by the ears. After awhile, Grace's ears never would totally stand. They stand 1/2-way, if you can visualize. I just assumed it was from all the biting of and dragging by the ears when she was a pup. Am I wrong? All of her pups' ears are standing (I keep in close contact with the people who bought her puppies). Of course, the stud's ears were standing, so possibly the pups got his genes, if in fact it IS a genetic trait. Thanks for the input.

How old is Gracie now? if she's under 6 months, with taping they may still be able to stand all the way.

No. She is 2 years old (or will be next month). She has had one litter of puppies, all of which have erect ears. I did try the taping when we got Angel and she bit on Grace's ears so much. But then, she would just bite/chew the tape off. It was quite frustrating.

Opinions will differ. I believe that in some cases it can be genetic and in some cases it can be circumstantial or environmental, you get it. Not taped, not shaved, let time past for training them. I don't believe yours was genetic, particularly since the babies all stood up. Those that believe it's all genetic will say it wil show down the line.

It just seems strange, because both her parents' ears stood, and all of HER babies' ears stood, so I also tend to think hers is circumstantial. But I just wanted to be sure, because I am an information junkie, and I want to know the FACTS.

In certain cases it might be genetic. BUt it most cases I think the ears just were not trained or other enviromental factors just like in your case. Most ears can be trained.

When you say "trained" do you mean taped? My mentor's vet said NOT to tape them, because then they (the puppy) won't use the ear muscle to stand. He told her that it will actually weaken the muscle and can cause just the opposite effect. . . . ? None of the owners of Gracie's pups or Angel's pups taped their ears, and all 6 have erect ears. I thought that was strange, because it goes against what I read on here all the time.

Your mentor's vet is incorrect. Some pups need assistance, especially during the teething period.....calcium is being used up by teeth and bones.....Therefore, at times the ears need shaving to keep the weight from breaking down the cartilage, at at times need taping. If you visit some of the top breeder exhibitor's websites and these are well known respected breeder's they have instructions on taping ears. The Yorkshire Terrier Magazine has articles on taping from time to time.

Mardelin, in your opinion, can it be a genetic factor? And if so, then is it futile to try to tape up the ears of a pup who has "floppy-ear genes"? | |

Several years ago when I brought my first yorkie home, with her ears tapped, I removed it and they flopped. I retapped and removed and they flopped. I began researching an found that if I shaved the ears all the way down on both sides, it would help. Well I tried it and retapped. 3 days latter removed the tape and waited, 1, 2, 3, 4 days they never went back down. I shave my pups ears before they even open their eyes and every week there after. I have to tape some of their ears and not others.

Yes just like Mardelin and many others Im sure. I shave the ears front and back, or use little mustache scissors to cut the hair very short. I used to get so frustrated and didnt tape much! But if I have stubborn ears I do now and its easy. THe ears do come up much quicker or possibly come up where otherwise they wouldnt without help. I just use the wide shipping tape, it works well. I usually just tape a couple days at a time with a day break in between. Trying to keep ears from getting irritated. Make sure you leave a space at the bottom so the ear canal can breath. SOmetimes it doesnt always work the first time. BUt any of my puppies Ive worked to make their ears stand have stood. Even some with the large donkey ears!...........lol.
