Lacy's mom heart broken and confused

I went to vet on Tuesday to have Lacy and #1 pup checked out and all is well with both. I asked my vet if I did any thing wrong when puppy #2 was not breathing when she was born. The vet said I did every thing right and there is really no explaining why puppy #2 didn't make it. It put me alittle a ease knowing My husband and I did every thing we could to get puppy to breath and the vet confirmed it. I will post pictures as soon as I learn how, as I'm a new viewer

I am so happy that Lacey and her baby had a good checkup with your vet. Thank you for the update. I can't tell you how very sorry I am about puppy #2, but I know you all did everything there was to be done. Looking forward to seeing Lacey and her baby. God bless you all!

Did she deliver all the placentas.....You may want to take her to the vet for an Oxytocin shot. Highly recommended 12-24 hours after whelping. It will help the uterus clamp down and expell anything left behind. It also helps with the milk processing.

No, My vet usually gives me premeasured injections.....after he x-rays to see how many pups are visible. I was lucky the last litter I only had to give my matron a shot the following morning.

Oxcytocin is givin to human maternity patients to assist in speeding up the contractions......It is a drug and can only be purchased through Doctors/Vetinarians.

I want to stress that oxcytocin is a very valuable drug in the hands of an expericenced breeder. Never administer it haphazardly...it must be used in the correct dosage, at the correct times. I have never used it before the actually whelping of the first pup without the vets input and okay. It is a valuable drug for the breeder..prevents many fatal deaths and c-sections..and it is valuable to use after whelping to clean out the uterus and prevent infections.

I agree, you did all you could to save your puppy...I am not finding any fault with you in that area..everything is a learning experince and a long whelping can and does result in fatal death sometimes...and then sometimes they just do not breath and that is heart breaking. I wish you all the best with your next litters..but puppies will always die, it is a cruel fact of Mother Nature...that is why the ones that survive are so very precious to us.

Question - just out of curiosity, have not bred, have been "thinking" about it for 3 years now - anyway, how do you administer the oxy- inject into the muscle in the rear?

Into to muscle in the rear? As it does sting and they jerk, I usually have someone hold. I administer it 12-24 hours after she's whelped. If needed during the whelping process I will only administer it if the Vet has instructed me to.
